Superpiper, D'Arcy, and other interested skiers on the forum, we just returned from a great ski trip to Stowe and Jay Peak VT. I will never get tired (figuratively ) from skiing Vermont. My legs OTOH are telling me I'm tired though LOL!
We've never skiied Stowe. Another beautiful resort to add to the list. The conditions were a little icey, but on the whole, a great mountain!
When we travelled up to Jay, it was starting to snow. The weather was forecasting snow through the night, and when we arrived at the mountain Saturday morning, we were treated to at least 6" of fresh powder!! I've never skiied this kind of powder before! What a rush!! I could hear guys in the glades whooping and howling as they negotiated the trees! It was phenomenal! Very strenuous on the legs, and by 1300 we were ready to pack it in, albeit with huge grins on our faces
Superpiper, the pics below are of my sons, midway down Derek Hot Shot, at Jay!
D'Arcy, we have to talk about Telemark skiing. I'm quite intriqued. Nowhere have I seen so many telly skiers than at Jay! It looks very physical. Something I think I'd like to try sometime!
#1 son rides a board! It was still snowing as you can see:

#2 son on skiis! The sides of the run had at least 2 feet of powder banked up. They leave the groomers in the garage for a while on these runs. On Sunday they had some runs partly groomed for the guys like me who are running low on stamina for the deep stuff!

The kids are at their grandparents now. I'm going to run them down to Ellicotville NY later this week and ski Holiday Valley. After skiing Vermont, it's hard to go back to the local hills. They've never skiied WNY, so it should be fun. I just hope it warms up a bit.
I find that at the end of the season I try to cram as much skiing in as possible. I'm the same way with sailing. I recall last fall getting out on the water as much as possible before the season ended! The only trouble is, I have work to do on Paradise, which gets neglected. Oh well!

Eric

Eric....speaking about 'Paradise'...

I noticed on the Trailer Sailor board, someone asked you if you sold it yet? Are you planning to move up to a bigger boat this year?

Don, I don't know how that comment came about? I never once mentioned Paradise was for sale. I think someone read too much into a post of mine.
I'd be lying to you if I said I never looked at another boat though . I would like to have a little more cabin room for the family, truth be told, but we're managing and having fun with her .
I'll tell you this, the Sandpiper is a tough boat to beat, for trailering, setting up, and sailing! To move up to a bigger boat, one that is trailerable, and shallow draught, is going to be a challenge.

They say the Sirus 21 is a good boat, and at 2000 lbs no problem behind your truck. http://www.sailboatsales.com/usedspecs.asp?ModelSearch=Sirius+21
If I was at a lake or moored at a yacht club all summer, I probably would have investigated the Catalina (Capri)18 that was for sale last year in Toronto. I love the idea of a flat cabin floor...no centerboard trunk to get in the way. For dry sailing , The Sandpiper has to be the best.

I'm heading to the slopes on the 24th of this month. Not sure but thinking of Keystone. Which is of course in Colorado. They also have night skiing, and a great Village if you like the night life. I'll try and get some pictures. We have been getting a lot of mountain snows so it should be good.

Vermont is a great place to ski. Hope to get their again, soon. We've been skiing a bit closer to home (Huntsville). Here I am with my oldest son (They grow up very quickly Eric)

Nice day for watching a race. Here's my nephew bombing the hill. (7 years old)

Patrick is a "Snow Boarding Dude". He took up telemark skiing 3 days before this race shot was taken. Classic telemark style.

I've never ski raced before but I gave it a try. It's terrifying. Think I'll stick to racing sailboats.

When all this snow melts, we'll be sailing on it.

Wow, those are great photos. D'Arcy, I can feel the sunburn!

Eric, one of the guys hooting and hollering in the sous-bois at Jay was very likely my son.

Meanwhile, the rest of the family (actually 3-generations of the family) have just returned from Saint Sauveur, north of Montreal. This was the 5th March break that we spent at Hotel Mont Gabriel. Our numbers were down: only 10 compared to a high of 14. With kids, nieces & nephews at college and university, it is hard to get everyone together.

We skied Mont Blanc on Wednesday, March 16. That same evening we night-skied Mont Avilla. For St. Patrick's Day and Friday morning, we were on Mont Gabriel. The weather was great. The snow conditions were also good (sometimes the season has ended before Ontario's March break). Sorry, no photos.

Eric, we have not been to Stowe (I skied Smuggler's once as a teenager). Do you recommend it? Was it expensive? Are there accommodations on the hill?

D'Arcy, Hidden Valley is on the to-do list. How much longer is the resort open? Is there a chance of getting on the hill in April?

Unfotunately, Hidden Valley closes Easter Sunday. Too bad; because this year there is still tons of snow.

Super P, yes Stowe is expensive, but then everything is expensive compared to our CDN$35/day lift pass at Jay!! It's a beautiful resort with lots of terrain. Was a little on the icey side when we were there.
The town has alot more for apres, and services, and loads of places to stay. Quite a difference from Jay! I would go back, because after two days, you start to find the nice runs on the last afternoon it seems, and you want to ski them more

The kids and Karen went to Snow Valley Sunday, and returned shortly after. Conditions were sloppy, and they where quite bored with the hill after skiing VT.
I did take the boys to Kissing Bridge, south of Buffalo last Thursday. I haven't been since I was in high school in St. Catharines. It's still quite a party place.

On the lift, we passed this tree full off Mardi gras beads, and umm, ladies undergarments
We got CDN$15 lift passes for the day at a ski shop in St. Catharines. can't beat that!!
Great pics of Hidden Valley D'Arcy!!

Indeed, it's been a terrific season here in VT. It was a slow start, but since late-Jan, it's been unbelievably good. Due to the below seasonal temps, the snow we've gotten has barely melted. The weather the last 10 days has been perfect. Warm & sunny, but mainly below freezing. I burned the heck out of my nose last Tues! I've been careful to slather on the sunblock since then.

At Okemo, I had a few of your fellow Ontarians in lessons last week. The first thing I'd ask them was if they had ever heard of a 'Piper!

Okemo has set 4/17 as the projected closing date. As much as I'm looking forward to the lakes clearing so I can set sail again, I'm hoping it stays cool till the 17th!

It wasn't our first snow, but, it was the first REAL snow of the year. Peterborough got 15-20cm. Other areas got a lot more.

The fresh white and the glazed trees and the plowed streets reminded me of a Halifax postcard (with about 2metres less of Mother Nature).

We're supposed to have gotten 40 cms at the end of it all. I'm going on a ski trip with the KCVI ski team to Calabogie on tuesday...

We're going skiing tomorrow. Rare to get out before Christmas but you'vr got to seize the moment.

Where is Calabogie? I think we might be skiing there later in the season.

It's west of Ottawa, not a huge place, but it's the closest to us.
