The Sailfish 18 and the Sandpiper 565 came on the scene in the early 70s. So you may wonder, what features does the Sandpiper share with other boats of that era?
The IOR rule had just taken over from the RORC rule and the CCA rule. The IOR rule created the Tonners:
2-Ton
1-Ton
1/2-Ton
1/4-Ton, and the
Mini-Ton
The mini-ton series of boats included:
Irwin 21
Kiwi Mini-Ton (22' LOA)
Mirage 5.5 Mini-Ton (20' LOA)
Ranger 22
Prior to the IOR, sailboats typically featured full length keels, pinched sterns and masthead foresails.
Features that seem to be typical across the mini-tonners:
Straight, angled bows
Wide, vertical transoms
Transom-hung rudders
Fractional rigs (the jibs don't go all the way to the masthead)
Retractable fin keels (for trailering; none have full-length keels, some have swing keels)
The mini-tonners raced as one-designs, or raced under IOR, MORC and PHRF.
So I wonder if our Sandpipers are mini-tonners. Or, at least they may have been inspired by the mini-tonners.
I should try to find the mini-ton rule.

I think you've done an excellent analysis there Dennis. If you compare our boats to Sharks, a slightly older design you can see the change in thought. At 24 feet long the Shark has 6 feet of beam. Our boats carry the same beam over only 18.5 feet. The wide design helps give us good initial stability.
