Hello All,I'm new to this form. Just signed up today. I purchased a Sandpiper in the fall and have not yet sailed her. When I purchased the boat the owner didn't have a motor. What size do you think I can get away with? Do you think a 2.5 or 3.3 will do? Regards,

This subject has been discussed several times on this forum. You can search for motor or engine and come up with a lot of discussion. As I recall, the general feeling is that 4 hp is about the minimum desired for the Sandpiper. I have 4 hp and I would not want less, although I might purchase another 4 hp if I needed a new motor. I don't usually have problem, but given that the Sandpiper has a lot of freeboard it does blow around in a strong wind, and I have encountered situations in which I wasn't making much progress upwind under motor power. I think the guys with 6 hp are happier, but 4 hp works. And welcome to the club! Any plans to come to the rendezvous this summer? How old is yor boat? What sail number? At one point somebody was trying to assemble a list of Sandpipers, but I haven't seen anything yet. You got any photos to post? IP: 67.107.33.106 |

Hello Patrick, I run a 4.5 HP Suzuki four stroke and I'm happy with it. I also have a 2 Hp Honda Four stroke and it works well also. In a strong head wind it needs a little help. You say why two motors, The Honda came with the boat and is a great Backup. Sid IP: 198.81.26.106 |

Hi Patrick. Welcome to the CL Forum!Patrick found me on the TrailerSailor forum, and I directed him here The TrailerSailor forum is a good place to find out general info, but here is where the Hardcore Sandpiper sailors hang out I see you're part of the CPS. I am really glad they dropped their affiliation with Boats and Places magazine. I usually put mine into the bluebox right from the mailbox. The arrangement with Canadian Yachting is much more balanced , and I'm looking forward to recieving the new magazine. Eric IP: 130.63.85.93 |

Speaking about 'Boats & Places.... I was thinking about taking advantage of their $ 16.00 subscription offer just to get the '30,000 Islands' DVD they are offering. I thought it might be a good way to preview the Georgian Bay sailing area. IP: 142.177.33.151 |

I'm glad I was told about this site. I was wondering why there wasn't one when there are many Sandpipers around. Here are the answers to some of your questions. The boat is sail number #924. As the boat is in storage at the moment I could not tell you the hull number or year. When I had my DS16 the sail numbers and hull numbers didn't match. Do they match on the Sandpipers? My boat was called "Gettin Air" but we are changing her name to "Barefoot". I'm making sure I'm following protocol for the name change. I bought the boat from a gentlemen in Calgary who had it for a year and used it once. Thank you for all your help on motors. I will be looking at a couple for motors tomorrow. A 5 hp Mariner (Short Shaft) and a 8 hp Suzuki (Long Shaft). The long shaft version is the most appealing. I just hope it is not to heavy. I looks like there are a few CPS members here. I'm with you on the changing of the Boats & Places to Canadian Yachting. I didn't like the powe boat mag. But I think I will sign up for another year so I can get the BC DVD. My wife and I are hoping to take Barefoot to BC in a couple of years to do some sailing. Don, I know your name from somewhere. Was it form the CPS forum or the DS16 forum by chance? How do you post pictures on this forum? I have a couple of before pictures I can put up. I say before because were are thinking of painting the hull (I'll start another thread on that later). As well we are looking at redoing the inside (We don't like the look of all that fibreglass, we want to add wood). Thats all for now. Patrick "Barefoot"

Hi Patrick... re hull/sail numbers...mine don't match. (although they did on my CL14) As you already know, the last two didgets on the transom of the later models designate year of manufacture. As for the motor...get a long shaft...not short. My 6 hp Evinrude is supposed to weigh about 67 pounds, but feels heavier. I post to a couple of boating newsgroups..including rec. boats and occasionally 'Trailer Sailer' but not to the CPS forum.. A lot of people used to confuse me with 'Dan White'(former husband of Louise White), who was a local training officer and is still involved locally with another position on 'the bridge'. Welcome.... You will find tonnes of info here, along with a great bunch of sailing enthusiasts. I myself have a 2002 8 HP Honda Four stroke. I find it more than ample for this boat. It has the remote option which is a great feature. It is on the starboard side just before the entry way. It allows for easy docking and handling in tight areas. http://community.webshots.com/user/ajeepthing4 there are a couple of pics of the motor and set-up in there. I will be changing the mount this spring, I think the motor is too heavy for the factory one. I must warm you, since I have joined this forum, my list of things to do (to the boat) has grown and been added to many thimes. There are some very creative people here and I am sure you will encounter the same thing!! Interesting, Rob's a gearhead who likes sailing rather than high performance power boats Sooner or later, you'll leave all remnants of the darkside behind you, Buhwhahah Rob, there's a big Jeep Jamborie in Ontario, usually the August long weekend. It's held somewhere north of Buckhorn, in the Kawarthas. This is the same weekend as our Rendevous however! I would hate to have to choose between the two! Patrick, your subscription to Boats and Places gets you a DVD on BC? I guess in their mind there is only two great places to sail in this country. I'm surprised Don didn't get a DVD with an eastern sailing destination! Eric IP: 216.209.109.47 |

Eric...there were only two choices ..... 30,000 Islands, Georgan Bay, or the BC Coast. Don't ya know...Canada ends at the Quebec border? ( a good DVD of the Bras d'Or Lakes would have been super) I just sent my cheque away on the weekend and expect my DVD with the April issue.IP: 142.177.33.151 |
