Near the end of our vacation this year the wind really came up, making the sailing a little too exciting. I thought it would be a good time time to try the wrap around the boom reefing. What a mess. After struggling for an hour I never got it to a place where I was happy with it and the boat sat at the dock. The wrapping process was too awkward and I was worried about damaging the sail. Is there anyone out there that uses this successfully that would be willing to share some tips and tricks. My current thinking is that I will get the sailmaker to put in a conventional reefing point and forget about wrapping the main around the boom. I am also considering installing a boom topping lift to keep the boom from flopping around and getting in the way when the main is down. I would appreciate any input on materials or techniques to install the lift. I am thinking about installing a vang near the top of the mast and running a cable to the business end of the boom. If it was me, I'd check a local sail loft for pricing on having the reefing cringles installed. Why not attach a bungy cord between your main halyard & boom and use that as a topping lift when sail is down?IP: 142.177.153.63 |

I think most of us that have to old rolling reefing system changed to the conventional. I have an old posting about my topping lift. I have a line attached to the top of the mast. I attached a short piece of metal with two holes. One was used to attach the metal to the mast head using the bolt that keeps the wheel for the main halyard. I have a horn with a hole screwed near the aft end of the boom. The line is run through the little loop on the boom end and hooked on the horn. When I need the lift I pull teh line until the boom is at required level and lock it on the horn. When sailing I let the line loose but still attached to the horn. Tom D.IP: 64.12.117.21 |

Yup, deep six that roller reefing!!! Once you get the reef points sewn in, then you'll need some rigging on the boom to easily reef the sail. Some folks like the single line reef system, where others like a two line set up. I'm in the latter group You will definately need a topping lift with a jiffy reef set up. It will be needed when you go to reef. You have to set the topping lift before you ease the main halyard, then set the clew reef, then the tack reef, and then adjust and cleat the halyard. The Sandpiper has two tangs on the boom end, one for the mainsheet, the other for the topping lift. I take it the CL16 does not. Eric
