I'm in the middle of setting up my old CL16 for "armstrong" power. I have obtained a set of (handmade spruce 9') oars, and installed the oarlocks so that the centre pin is 10 1/2" aft of the edge of the thwart. I am now setting up a sliding seat, and a footrest, so that when I am out on the briny I can get some exercise in the calms. Any input into the positioning of the sliding seat?? I'd rather start from a position that is based on some expertise, rather than fiddling with total trial and error. I am starting to get pumped about Spring sailing. Yesterday, it was 13 degrees out (although very little in the way of breeze). Hope you all are faring well, and looking forward to a new season. Cheers, Doug IP: 209.52.116.8 |

out of curiosity... where did you get your oarlocks, and how did you install them?------------------ Canadian Sailor ;) "Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes." IP: 216.209.110.42 |

A year and a half ago, Robert (Celtic Kiss) put a fair amount of thought into rowing his CL16, including sime kind of u shaped bracket for the oarlocks that was easily removed. If you have the patience...try a search on author= celtic kiss.IP: 142.177.171.178 |

I obtained the bronze eye-type oarlocks from the old-boy who made the oars; he has them custom cast at a foundry, and then machines the shafts and the female flush mount sockets so they are a smooth fit.I made the mounts for the oarlock sockets out of some dense mahogany stock (1 1/2 x 1 1/2 by 8"). Bullnosed and tapered the block of mahogany so that the face in which I drilled for the bronze oarsocket is 3/4" wide. I then positioned the drilled block at the edge of the gunwhale in the desired position, drilled two pilot holes through the block, the deck, and an undersides reinforcing block. I then used machine screws to bolt it all together. Too bad I don't have a digital camera, or I would post some pictures. I have had the boat out on a little lake to do the test run; seems to work fine. However, it felt a bit awkward rowing from a fixed position on the thwart. I bet it will work much better once I figure out my footrest and (removable) sliding seat... Thanks for the tip on the Celtic Kiss...I'm now going on a hunt on the ether!
