I was looking through the posts from the last year over the weekend and noticed several different styles of rudders. Are there different styles or have you made mod's to your existing?

This made me look at my rudder assembly a little closer. I noticed what looks like prop marks on mine. Is this a problem if you try to turn hard to port?

BTW, I purchased the 8hp Suzuki (1983) long shaft on the weekend. You would swear it was new. You could eat off the engine.

LOL Patrick
You're probably right on the prop marks. My rudder had some when I purchased the boat. Last winter I refinished my rudder, and when completed, it was pristine if I do say so . First sail last spring, my rudder unintentionally kicked up when I was motoring, and put a prop scar in the blade .
Moral of the story is keep the rudder blade down when motoring!!

Sounds good on the motor, congrats. Does it have an alternator? That would be a bonus if it did!

I'm always fixing my rudder, got to try not to turn to hard to port. Thought about seeing if I can but a guard for the prop.

This is the Doel-fin from Davis. I have considered this device as a fender to keep prop-rash off the rudder.

Sid and Dennis, do you guys experience "prop rash" with your rudder blade down? I only seem to have a problem when my blade is kicked up.

When my rudder is up its higher than the prop.

I think they make a round guard that does not stick out as far as that fin. I need to look around a bit

I mounted a small peg, 1/2" round by about 3" long on my motor fin. It hits the rudder blade and keeps it away from the prop.

You can see the little peg mounted on the motor fin in the picture at this link. It looks like a motor cycle footpeg. This boat is an O-Day Daysailer II but the same rudder rash problem was experienced until this fix:

Actually, if you look at the shadow of the lower unit of the motor you can see it even better!

Thanks Rodger, that is a simple fix. Guess that will be my second project for the up coming season. Got to clean up the teak again.
