I need to reupholster the interior cushions.
suggestions? It seems from preliminary research it's quite expensive. Can I do this myself?

I've been thinking the same thing.

After talking with an upolster here in Winnipeg he said it would cost me $25 to $40 per small cushion and $60 to $80 per large cushion if I supplied the materials.

What I've come up with to try is to use the old cushions as templates and then cut out 3/8 thk plywood slightly smaller and place 3" or 4" med density foam cut to shape on top of the wood then cover with sunbrella (I just bought 25 yards on e-bay for $150.00) which would be stapled to the underside of the wood, then place marine vinyl on the under side of the wood.

This is something that can be done in an afternoon and is cheaper than buying or having new cushions made.

I had new cushions made from thick dense foam and marine vinyl cover. Bad mistake. Was VERY expensive too.

I had wanted something that would not ubsorb moisture and smell. I had solved that problem but the vinyl rubbed against the fiberglass and/or the wooden locker covers and squeeked REALLY BAD whenever you sat down or moved. Here's a pic;

Never again will I take that approach.
Sunbrella properly fitted with a zipper to insert and remove the foam is probably the way I would do it next time.

Sunbrella is normally really expensive but there are deals out there if you look, as Patrick obviously has.

I'm signing up for sewing classes I want new cushions too! Plus I have to make me the Wind Chime cockpit shade cover .

Thanks for the tip on the vinyl Fred. A freind of mine has vinyl covered cockpit cushions, and I would never go that route either. They'll burn your backside when you sit down while you're out in the sun!!

My 'Piper came with white vinyl cockpit cushions.
As I remember on the Mirage 33, people were always standing on the seat cushions with their deck shoes for one reason or other.
I guess you'd need something durable & easy to clean.

Hmmm... I have vinyl cockpit cushions but haven't had a problem with them. Actually I don't use them much. Fabric cushions inside.

You all wait till i slow down this winter and talk to me. Only problem is shipping might be expensive. Remember this is what I do for a living. And yes Sunbrella is expensive. I used regular cloth in the cabin. Sunbrella outside. Not the best pictures here, but you get the idea.

My cushion covers are also rotted, especially near the companionway. Here is something to consider. To access the quarter lockers, it is necessary to lift on the long quarter cushions. In a typical Sandpiper, the quarter cushions are loaded with gear under the cockpit. Have any of you considered cutting the long cushions to match the locker cover dimensions? Or, cut out the area over the locker cover but sew it with a hinge back onto the longer cushion? Or create a new cushion that extends across the 2 locker covers and leave 2 shorter cushions forward and aft? The smaller cushions could be more likely to skate around in the middle of the night.

Any thoughts?

I want "pretty" inside, with functionality and durability. I'm the wife (of Shortstay btw). We don't even have the cockpit cushions yet. The boat came with really ugly brown fabric on them that's now fraying. Someone had a picture posted of their interior with really pretty blue cushions. I spoke with someone yesterday who does upholstering here in town and they charge labor by the running inch. Just describing dimensions of the cushions over the phone she estimates about $1300 US for labor alone. Not in my budget. I guess I'll have to somehow attempt myself. The cushions already have the vinyl type bottoms, so I'll salvage that and get new fabric and work using current cushions as templates I guess.

What...$1300 US??
Why, even the CL people will sell you a new set of interior cushions for $ 720.00 CDN.
Dirt cheap when converted to American dollars! ;-)
