I just bought a 565 and noticed while she was on a non-standard trailer and the keel was fully lowered, that some work may be needed on the keel where the "heavy bit" joins the other bit. I am looking for tips on the best way to remove keel for an inspection and/or repair.

My Way, this is most interesting!

Nobody else has ever reported being able to distinguish between the heavy bit and the other bit. So, nobody has ever mentioned a problem with separation.

On larger boats with fixed keels, it is frequently easy to tell where the ballast meets the glassed part of the keel. There is often a crack in the glass or paint or finish. You are the first to indicate any separation in a Sandpiper keel. Fascinating.

So, where is the crack? How far from the bottom? Can you describe it? Is it perfectly horizontal?

We have known that the entire keel is not ballasted. One skipper has added 50lbs of lead into the unballasted portion of his keel. Another skipper has a keel with an external bulb which adds another 40-50 lbs.

Here is a drawing of the keel from the Sandpiper rigging manual:

My Way you are providing us with new knowledge about our 'Pipers. Please post more details.

Unfortunately, I cannot pass-on much info about the potential problem with the keel. There was no further opportunity to examine the area and I had only less than a minute to see what might be a problem. The boat at the time, was on a trailer with legs and pads to support a much larger fixed keel boat. Because she was so high up I was able to wind down the keel all of the way so that I could inspect the keel for any damage. The keel seemed fine but just before she towed away to a boat launch ramp I noticed what appeared to be a very slight gap at the top of the lead ballast where it is joined to the GRP moulding. The potential damage was right where the keel disappears into the keel box at the forward end of the keel. I just don't know if I have a problem or not and that is why I would like to drop the keel if it possible.
Any suggestions?

Good morning, Walter. We both posted simultaneously.

I thought that there was a photo of Eric's keel ready to go back in the boat. But, I couldn't find it.

Have a good day.

If you do a search on CoolBreeze you should find his well documented repairs.

Hi Brian.
Pictures would be very helpful when you can get a chance. Maybe you won't have to completely remove your keel, as it sounds. Where are you, and the boat? Is she a saltwater boat, or freshwater?
First of all, your trailer sounds like you have the boat up very high. Make sure you support the weight of the boat in transit, or support the keelson(if that's the right term). A roller, or support, just before the keel would be advisable. On a fixed keel boat, most of all the weight is supported by the keel when on the trailer.

The keel of the Sandpiper is fibreglass encased lead. The fibreglass is made of two halves and the top. If water has penetrated the fibreglass, and frozen, the force may have split the joint(s). You will see what I had to do to my keel, in terms of repair, in the above links. It's a pretty straight forward repair. The work is getting the keel out. It's pretty heavy, and awkward to move about. You do not want to cause any damage to the screwed shaft.
It's also very important that the screw plate attached at the top of the keel is secure, and coated in epoxy. You don't want to lose the keel out on the lake.
Hope this helps a bit. Fell free to ask away any other questions.

Eric
