Just wondering about the best way to launch a 'Piper from your trailer if...
1) you are alone
2) there is no wharf or float to tie up to.
Do you have to climb up over the bow pulpit after you back the trailer into the water?

Learn to swim! LOL

Leave the keel up, but the ladder on the stern, beach the boat, park the car, come back and push off. Don't forget to lower the keel, And in case you fall off the back of the boat, swim fast.

I've never done that yet. I don't have much desire to start launching alone at that type of ramp. I might try it with a helper though, and if proficient, then go solo.

I like the security of a dock. Also I like the added security of a hard surface ramp, for getting out. This doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

I would hope you're able to raise the mast prior to launch. As Hyperstich points out, you're very likely to get wet!

Good luck with it.

A dock is always nice to Launch from. Your center board is down. Its easy.

Not knowing or ever heard od a Sandpiper before I bought mine, the reasn I bought it was the center board. I know I could beach the boat.

Many times Launching from the beach I hardly get wet. But it sure helps to have the ladder down when Launching form the shore.

Sid...Do you turn the bow out before climbing up the transom..or do you walk out and around to the stern to climb up?

Yes, I turn the bow into the lake, and push off at the stern. I have a ladder that hangs off the stern, and once underway I store it in the cabin. Thnk it was only about 40 dollars at West Marine. It to hard to climb into the boat without the ladder.

If your beach launch area is rocky and sharp (barnicles on the rocks, etc.) you can drop anchor slightly offshore then back into the shore by letting off the anchor line. Arrange a loop on the anchor line so you can pull the boat offshore when you go to park the car. Tie the loop to a tree, larger rock or second anchor.

If the wind is offshore this method helps you get the boat out a bit while you hoist sail preventing that awful crunching of the hull on rocks due to wave action.

It's a bit more work but sometimes a useful technique to know.

.......Just back the trailer like mad down the ramp and then hit the brakes at the water's edge! You'll launched more boat/trailer/car combos that way......

Seriously folks....We always used a hard ramp near a dock and a had long bow painter from the boat to the driver's seat. I installed boat guides on the trailer to help to centre the hull on the trailer when retrieving it. We also installed those white rough adhesive sticky pads on the trailer tongue to prevent my feet from slipping when walking along the tongue towards the bow.
