We just bought a 79 Sandpiper. I have been lurking on this site, trying to get info. Its been a wealth of information! I am new to sailing (as in NEVER ) My husband is experienced, but hasn't had a sailboat in many years. He promises I am going to love it. After reading all the threads, I think he is right. We are based on Lake St Clair, will mostly be doing day trip during the week. The boat need a little TLC, but the sails are almost new, as well as most of the rigging, lines etc. Don't have the sailing vocabulary down yet. LOL Looking forward to hearing more of your stories and seeing pics. We will be posting pics soon. Happy sailing! IP: 68.85.143.78 |

Its great to see yet another piper on the line. I think you will love it they are very stable and safe. The sailing lingo is something that you will pick up as you go, I would'nt let a little thing like that stop you from posting. Welcome Aboard Bob

Welcome Sunbums! The Sandpiper is a great boat. Stable, trailerable, fits my garage. Lots of benefits for a small boat. In my comparisons with other boats of similar size, it appears to be very well built. I haven't been out on Lake St. Clair yet, but hope to go out soon. It's not too far from me. Initially, I had problems pointing close to the wind. I found out that the shallow lake I normally sail in has lots of weeds, and even small amounts of weed on the keel drastically reduce ability to point. That would be true of any boat, of course. Since solving that problem, I have really enjoyed sailing the Sandpiper. Anything unique about sailing the Sandpiper?? Well, i rarely sail with the keel all the way down. Generally from 60 to 85 turns down, going downwind or beating, respectively. IP: 67.107.33.106 |

Thank you for the warm welcomes!!! We still haven't launched her yet. Have to get an impeller (sp?) for the 4 hp motor. Need to clean, rub out & wax. She hasn't been in the water since 1984! Poor girl. I am sure she is itching to get back in! Its been stored inside all this time. I do love the roomy feel of the cabin. I was surprised how open & airy it feels. Can't wait to set sail!IP: 68.85.143.78 |

Its almost flying! Got to cross Loveland Pass to get to the lake. 1100 feet. The water never gets warm. And a hot summer day can be feel a lot like winter at times. Also maybe one of the prettiest places to sail. Sid IP: 64.12.117.21 | |
