I purchased a sandpiper last year. Love it so far!! But I keep getting ask how old she is. The person who sold it to me has no idea. My CL14 had a number on the transom to alow one the info.
My boat is number 576 thats all I know.
Cody if they started makeing them in the 70's with a starting number being 100 , is there a formula or relation between number and year. eg 100,s = 1974 200,s = 75 etc, is there any way to get the age of the hull ????

Hey piper576, congrats on selecting a fine little boat.
Judging by your sail#, yours is a later version. You must also have a HIN# on the nameplate(something mine doesn't have).
Perhaps there's a date code in there. I'd suspect something in the 80's.
My sail# is 144, and my documentation says it's a 1976.

Thanks Eric, Sid
I have not located any type of nameplate on the hull. But in order to do regular maintance, screw lube, resetting of deck hardware etc... it would be nice to have a idea of age in the glass or screw/centerbaord.
She appears to be in good shape from the outside anyway.

Tom told me the last 'Pipers were built in '91 or '92.
I had asked in an earlier post how much a '74 model cost and how much the '91 model sold for...but didn't get an answer.

Hey Guys,

I can double check on the actual build date of #576. Class numbers are not always issued in sequence. A good example of this is when a dealer buys 10 boats... there is a block of class numbers reserved for that order but this is not to say the boats will get delivered in the same production year.

A S565 in 73 was close to... well I dont know if I really should say...$2100 with trailer... and in 92 with a trailer you were looking at $12,500 for the base model.

Now you all know why a CL16 was $895.00 in 1968 and is now $9,000.

piper576 I will e-mail when I have your build info form the office on Monday when I am there.

Just as a side note - I am currently developing a web app that will allow a user to input the class number of a sail and then see the year and other tasty info.. this is all part of the new CL website.

Cheers,

If only we knew...what an investment.
The early models are worth twice now what they originally cost in 73/74.
If there's still a new '92 hanging around in the company shed, I'd be glad to pay
$ 12K for it.

Some people think sailing is an expesive past time but I've never really lost money doing it. Whenever I've sold a boat, I always seem to get very close to what I paid for the boat. (This is of course not counting my labour spent over many seasons.)
