While we all are installing cabin curtains,or tweaking our rigging for that extra 1/4 knot of speed, we also need to review our attitudes and precautions regarding water safety. We've all heard, it seems, hundreds of times all our lives, that we can't be too careful around water. Yet the news continues to report water-related tragedies. We all, especially children, want to have carefree fun in our favourite water activities, but everyone must be prepared, and demonstrate common sense around the water.
- Never swim alone. Use the buddy system.
- Never leave small children unsupervised. Watch them constantly!
- Obey local rules.
- Avoid smart-alec behaviours.
- Don't jump off rocks until depth is determined. Be especially cautious with low water levels.
etc
- For the Sandpiper Rendezvous, although we are not anticipating any
"extreme" sailing athletics, skippers need to:
- Double-check all required safety equipment and gear on board. Even then, things can go wrong.
- Show crew where safety gear is stowed, and how to use it.
- Review with crew, even practise, your man overboard procedure. (Is the skipper the only one aboard who can helm the boat?)
- Perhaps carry the (free) Canadian Safe Boating Guide on board for some leisure-time reading.
Other thoughts?
The Rendezvous is the perfect place for crew members to develop a new skill or two.
May all sailing families enjoy a happy and safe summer.
