Last weekend I became the new owner of CL1368. Unfortunately, this CL16 was being used to store wood and there are holes in the hull that I'll need to fix where the trailer rollers went through under the weight loading. I have removed the teak and will be getting that into shape during the winter. The mast and sails were stored inside the cottage and appear to be in good shape. There is, however, a small area on the sail that has some mildew that needs attention. It does not look very bad, but I do want to treat and/or eliminate the mildew. The sails are from GENCO in Toronto. Any suggestions on what to do with my mildew problem?I sailed for the first time this summer after joining the Red Bay Sailing Club and am hooked for life! Now I just need to get my boat ready for the spring to join the other CL16s in the club. ------------------ Gord & Ruth & CL16#1368 Haven on the Bay B&B (Red Bay Sailing Club) [This message has been edited by HOTBay (edited August 26, 2004).] IP: 64.10.41.22 |

Hi Gord & Ruth -Welcome to the 'family'! When I read that your CL-16 had been used to store wood, it made my skin crawl! Travesty! I'm sure you'll have her in ship-shape soon, sailing proudly on your Bay. I have plenty of other 'issues', but I have no personal experience with sail mildew. I did, however, google it and I found this article from North Sails that might be helpful: http://www.northsails.co.uk/media/articles/mildew.html Have lots of fun! Try poking your finger through the mildew area. If it was rotten, you will need to replace the panel anyhow, so don't fret about your damaged sail, see your sailmaker. If your finger does NOT go through, you only have a stain. (It is impossible to stickyour finger through a good sail) Wash it with a mild solution of bleach, scrub with a nylon brush.IP: 216.55.218.148 |

To stop the spreading of mildew you can spray the area with Lysol - it kills the mold. Be very careful using bleach as I have ruined many pairs of jeans because the mix was to strong and just eats through the cloth. BobIP: 216.209.120.29 | |
