I went thru buying new sails for my Sandpiper. I was overwelmed with what to specify. I read a lot and was still confused. Here is a good site to learn the basics; http://www.uksailmakers.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.html I called a sailmaker (Kingston Sail Loft) based on the recommendation of some locals. They had never done a Sandpiper before but I supplied them with enough accurate dimensions that they did a super fine job. They never even saw the boat. But then I'm an engineer and I deal with dimensions and fits every day, so it came natural to me to know what they needed even tho I dont much about sailmaking. I ended up trusting the sailmaker to recommend what was best.... and I was really happy with results. Call around to local sail lofts. Listen to what they have to say. Preferably find one that you could take the boat to. But what do I know ... i dont even own a boat at this point in time Fred IP: 67.70.4.162 |

Alix:I am almost convinced that the sail from a Hobie 14 has the same or similar foot and luff dimensions. It will have more roach than a CL sail. The full length battens should improve sail set and performance. If you ever try this modification, please let us know the outcome. IP: 64.230.163.46 |

A Hobie main, although the right size might not work as well because it is designed for a boat that moves considerably faster (apparent wind angle is narrower and wind moves faster over sail). I believe the sail has a flatter cut.2Short's main looks beautiful though. What it seems to have over the standard Genco main supplied with Sandpipers is the abilty to be made fuller. This would allow you to get more power in the sail to drive through waves in lighter winds. It also looks like you could depower it in the extreme stuff. D'Arcy IP: 67.70.120.144 |

One problem is I don't even know if my coat is a CL, I mean it kind of looks like one but it's wooden. The main on there now has no roach and I was thinking that a sail with more roach and full battens would power up better since being wood this little boat is on the chubby side.opinions? here's the boat if your curious. http://www.vaxxine.com/clsailboats/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000621.html thanks

Alix:You own a Leader 14 or a Blue Jay knock off. The Leader a an Ian Proctor design, that is similar to the CL14... A Blue Jay is a McVay (BlueNose24) design. That does not appear to be the correct rig though. The norm would see a chined boat with a "full" roach. This has what is called a "hollow" roach. You could just give your sailmaker the dimmensions (Luff, Foot, Leech) and some info on the boat (Weight, Length, Beam, Mast Type, Rig Details) and then tell them your expected performance. They will cut you a custom sail. Cheers, ------------------ Cody J. Cody, thanks very much for identifying me boat. I don't know if I'll be cutting a new sail for this little one as it is getting some deck repair this winter. I may just leave it at that as I am currently working on building a larger boat. Although if the price is right I may look into it as I'd like to see how fast I can push this boat. Thanks for your help. IP: 209.171.57.132 |
