I've had a difficult winter. My wife was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease and we have had quite the rounds of doctors and testing. Since early December I have either been at work or with Cathy. Upon advice from several people, I gave myself a day. I didn't take my CL14, but rented a Capri 22 out of San Diego and sailed by myself for 6 hours. It was wonderful. The temperature was about 65 degrees F.,the waves were 1 ft on a 3 foot swell and the wind about 12 kts or so. (Can it get much better?) I went about 3 or 4 miles off shore, came back in the bay well past the yacht club sailing wing on wing, then and tacked back until I was tired, deliciously tired. I hadn't felt so good in months. Sailing is definitely therapeutic. ------------------ CL14 #1882 IP: 208.25.203.2 |

Sorry to hear the bad news about your wife. Hopefully the doctors can do something to stop it's progress. Sailing is still a month off up here and my CL 14 (sail 1347 I think)is still snug in my garage away from the light covering of snow we received today. I had a lifestyle change this winter. I was offered, and took an early retirement Dec. 31st. My wife had a chance to go back to work for a 14 week stint in Feb so i ended up housebound after som brutal cold weather in January and a record blizzard (38 inches snow) late February. I don't have a whole lot of freedom as I look after my 89 year old mother, who moved in after my dad died June 2002. She's pretty good, but I have to help with her meals and be here when the Red Cross people arrive to bath her a couple times a week and take her blood for testing.IP: 142.177.168.230 |

California: I also send Cathy my best wishes in her battle with Alhzheimers. I am very happy that you have an escape though if only just for a few hours. When I go sailing all my problems disappear and when i return to the dock, the world seems to be a better place. My friend and I are launching his Hobie 16 in late April and will tune the boat before we travel to British Columbia for a weekend regatta in May. Our goal is to not be last. He also invited me to a regatta in California in July and we hope to be the only Canadians there. If that's the case we can claim the title of "Top Canadian" I had originally planned to fly back to Nova Scotia to be re-united with Celtic Kiss this summer and sail the Bras d' or Lakes, but as luck would have it I fell in love with a Calgary gal and I/we may have to postpone NS for awhile.

Careful Robert...them wimmin' tend to waylay the best of plans. ;-) I'll be on the Bras d'Or Lakes with a 'new to me' Sandpiper...or at least my Cl 14. I'll pour a small swig of beer over the side in your honour.IP: 142.177.168.230 |

I bought my Sandpiper explicitly to "get away from it all". I wanted an activity that would force my attention away from the treadmill of today and tomorrow; that would divert my mental occupation with concerns and slowly supplant it with observations of nature, the water, the sails, and, eventually, reveal the folly of taking life too seriously. I usually sail alone. IP: 67.107.33.106 |

Hi elmet3 Do you launch from a trailer each time?... do you have a place where you can keep the boat rigged on your trailer?.... or do you have a mooring ball or slip to tie up to??

I have a slip on a very small inland lake, very close to work. During summer months I can leave work and be on the boat within 15 minutes. It is theraputic. I get a little bored with seeing the same water all the time, but that may be necessary for the proper attitude adjustment. I hope to take the boat out on Lake Erie in June for a little more excitment. IP: 67.107.33.106 |

California, I couldn't agree with you more! Sailing is a tonic for me as well. I think that's probably why we all sail!So sorry to hear of Cathy's illness. I understand completely the feeling of doctors, hospitals and treatments etc. It is very demanding and draining. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Just remember the sea will always be there for you when you need an "escape" for a while! Regards, Eric IP: 130.63.85.93 |
