Well I'm breaking down and putting her up for sale.My sailing buddy has a Shark 24 and I'm really tired of following him (from a distance) around Whitefish Bay. So I'm reluctantly giving up all the excellent benefits/features of the Sandpiper to buy something longer and faster but unfortunatley more 'spensive and not so convenient (like maybe a J24). Between June 2000 and the present I've EXTENSIVELY reconditioned this boat to the point that there's not much more to do to it anyways and thats half of my enjoyment. At any price this is a steal compared to what I have put into it money wise on top of the basic value of the boat when I got it, let alone all of the work involved. There are some big money improvements like the new sails and the re-done bottom. The boat is currently in the water and is use in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It is available for inspection almost any time. See this link for lots of photos and detailed equipment information. More available on request; http://sandpiper565.tripod.com/ E-mail me at fm.cm@sympatico.ca if you are seriously interested. Other contact info is on that web site. Hope you find a buyer soon. A J24 would be an exciting boat. If I didn't plan on trailering or cruising, and belonged to a club, that would be an excellent choice. I've seen them sell for $15K here-a-bouts.[This message has been edited by whited (edited July 21, 2004).] IP: 156.34.87.120 |

Well Fred, from a selfish point of view, I hope it takes a while for you to sell 2short . That way, you'll be hanging around here longer!! Seriously, I don't have any doubt that you'll get your price for her. By all accounts, she's a very fine Sandpiper! Is that the friend's Shark on your starboard bow in the above photo? From a distance it looks as if his woodwork is tip top, as does the rest of his boat! Why do you want to go with a Jboat? You might consider a Shark for yourself, and get some one design racing going! That would test your sailing skills ! One last question. Down here in Barrie, we've had some bad smog these last 2 days. It extends up to the Muskoka's for crying out loud. That never used to happen! Do you guys up around the Soo ever get "bad air days"? It's looking like one has to go farther north to get away from this stuff! Eric IP: 130.63.85.93 |

Hi; I've set the price reasonably I think.Yes that is the offending boat in the background. And I notice that I'm even looking at his stern in this photo! I did consider a Shark but it is an older boat. It is fast and seems to point reasonably high and takes the bigger waves better, but I want something more modern and that won't take a lot of money to get into tip top shape. We have a steel plant here that makes it hard to keep the shine on the boat all summer, but there is no smog like in the T.O. area. We usually get prevailing clean air right off of Superior. I'll actually be in the Muskokas next week (but without the boat). [This message has been edited by 2short S565 (edited July 22, 2004).] IP: 67.70.5.155 |

The boat looks great Fred. I was wondering how you adapted your Sony CD player to fit in the hatch way?I used to crew on a J-24 and still race on my brother's Shark. Both very fine and fast boats. However, in one foot of water, the Sandpiper is still the fastest. Good luck selling 2short. She'll make some sailor out there very happy. D'Arcy

However, in one foot of water, the Sandpiper is still the fastest. Also if your a Trailer Sailor as I am, the sandpiper is much easier to set up. take down, and trailer. Sid IP: 205.188.116.130 |

Good point Sid. We would have a tough time launching a keel boat on our lake as there are no cranes. You'd also need a very special garage to park a J-24 in.Shortwave's trailer has a removable (folding) centre tow beam. In its' folded arrangement, the boat can be stored in a regular garage. It was really a simple change. I bolted a piece of plastic tubing to the underside of the radio so that it hooks on the door sill. I used to have a keel position indicator on the end of the keel box. There was just enough space to easily lock the radio between that and the door sill. I took off the indicator this year and simplified my table top to maximize cabin space. So I added that piece of tubing to the radio as i liked it located right in the doorway. Now im waiting for questions on the keel position indicator. I know I will miss the great features of the Sandpiper. If it doesn't sell I probably wont be sorry. Fred

Yep...reasons I chose Sandpiper when i could have bought a Shark locally...Weight and retractable keel for trailering Needed something fairly seaworthy in case I got caught out in rough water. Needed a fairly well made boat with good hardware to survive cruel saltwater world Wanted a boat that still had support and parts available IP: 156.34.95.254 |

Too bad you have to give her up Fred.....I'm sure (like my own Sandpiper ShortWave did with D'Arcy) she'll find a good home. You've done a fine job with this vessel.Sharks are faster no doubt......Niagara 35's are even (potentially) swifter as we found out on Lake Ontario last Sunday on a beam reach in 15 kt winds IP: 141.117.228.250 |

Hello Ken; Even tho I'm new here, I have known of you for quite a while and had collected a bunch of pics of your/D'Arcy's boat.I'm going to keep an open mind and will be looking at a few options for a higher performing boat. The J24 was an obvious one but I could probably get more boat for the same money as one of those. Not sure if I can (or want to?) afford a 35 tho at this point. Sounds like you are enjoying yours! Thanks much for the reply. Fred IP: 67.70.4.223 |

Yes, the keel indicator. It kinda got buried in the main point of this thread. Any chance you'd open that up as a new topic? Pix would be nice! IP: 198.115.167.203 |
