I went to the Toronto Boat Show this past Thursday! The school buses where cancelled because of cold weather?? so I had my two boys with me.
I was warmly received by Cody at the CL booth. Unfortunately, Tom was not there.
These guys are a wealth of information, and everytime I meet them, I find out something new!
On display was the full range of current CL's! And they where there to sell boats!! One yacht club had purchased a fleet of 14's, and Cody told me he had a contract with the Sea Cadets for Echos! Well done guys! Cody explained that the Sea Cadet programme is excellent, and a good character builder. I'm glad there is Sea Cadets in Barrie, where I live! I'm going to enroll my kids for sure. Unfortunately the boys are ready to start now, but have a couple of years yet before they're old enough!

A couple of my nieces joined the sea cadets.
They enjoyed it so much they ended up in the naval reserves and travelled all over the place, including Europe & Hawaii.
I tried it in grade 10 but only lasted one night. Too much yelling and being bossed around. (this was in the 60's when young people were resisting authority)
As for the boat show...I hesitated until it was too late to exchange 'points' for a free night in the Royal York.
I may have to travel to the Virgin Islands
to make up for my disappointment :-)

We were at the show on Monday. It was deserted. Just us and a whole mess of sales people trying to interest us in "entry level" racer cruisers. (You know the line - Boat show special only $175,000.00.)

The good side of this was we also got to spend some quality time with very informative people. Spent a little too much time looking at docks and kayaks (I think some day I could afford a nice "entry level" kayak - After the Sandpiper of course.)

Spoke briefly with Cody. Came away feeling very impressed by the quality of Sandpiper construction. It's too bad more people don't appreciate a fine little boat fo messin about in.

Hi Darcy.....that's what I wanted to do...get all the dope I could on the Sandpiper from those who know it best.
In the Trailer Sailor BB I was asking how
the Capri 18 (Catalina 18) would compare against the Sandpiper. I do like the idea of an uncluttered cabin floor and solid keel.
On the other hand, if I'll be launching from a trailer 90% of the time, I'm sure the retractable keel is more practical.
Have you investigated the Capri 18?

Don:

The Capri 18 is a very pretty boat. It is like a miniature Farr 40. I was impressed with the inboard, double shrouds for tight sheeting of the jib. I assume that she points well.

The accommodations were rather tight compared to the Sandpiper, even without a keel trunk. If I remember correctly, the C18 only sleeps 2.

I noticed that about the cabin.
On the other hand, I believe the Capri 18 cockpit is 6' 8" long.
Do you know how long the Sandpiper's is?
How many average sized people can sit on the high side when on a tack?

When we first began to think about a small cruising sailboat I looked into the Catalina 18. We began to realize however that for our needs an easy to trailer (centreboard) boat fitted the bill. You're right, it has a slightly longer cockpit to the Sandpipers' 6 foot length. The real plus in mind though is how comfortable the Sandpiper cockpit is. It has beautiful high seatbacks set at the perfect angle for my back (A little too much power hiking in my past). I think 3 people could sit on the high side quite easily.

I know it's a personal thing but I didn't like the lines of the Catalina that much. Before we decided on a centreboard type, I was leaning towards the Edel 540 (French design, built in Canada I believe). There is one that sails on our lake and I've always admired it.

All these boats are a bit boxy to fit in all the stuff they have in them but I preferred the Sandpiper. It is just a little bit lower in height and slightly narrower which in my mind gave it a nicer look. Might even make it a better all round sailing boat too!

Speaking of the Virgin Islands..
My buddy called this afternoon to ask me to come on down. He is tweaking up a fleet of 3
Dynamic 62's for sale and has the use of one.
He promises me my own stateroom is I come down for a visit..
see similar boat *** http://www.boat-world.com/boatads/868236564.html ***
Just my luck all three would sell before I landed.

Retirement is the BEST job I ever had.
With an opportunity to go sailing and work on big sailing craft.
No thinking should be required. What a retirement gift.
Good luck and I hop you get your trip in.
