Hi piperguys! I am in my very first sailing season and I always sail with my wife acting as a crew.I noticed that the boat strong point is not keeping a steady course upwind when the tiller is left by itself.I was wondering if some of you, experimented piper skippers sail alone and how you manage to pull up the main without the boat starting to turn and go crazy from weight shift, waves, wind changes,etc... Hi Michael. I have a tiller pilot, which just clamps down on a rope strung between the aft mooring cleats. Mine is mounted under the tiller due to the tiller extension. Alot of times they are mounted on top. Here's a pic. I'll try to find an online link for you. There is another similar device made by Davis, which is found in most marine shops. Thanks guys! These things are interesting.I think I will get one of those for my boat. Do they really provide for enough times to do main sail maneouvers? I guess it depends on various conditions?... IP: 65.93.227.18 |

When sailing solo, I always used to put up the mainsail at the dock before leaving the shore. A roller furler made jib handling easy. Unless it's really windy we left the main up when motoring to the mooring tire. In higher winds you do ned some way to keep the boat's head to wind when lowering the main. Not sure that a simple tiller tamer will work very long when motoring along with the helm unattended.IP: 141.117.228.250 |

I have a similar rig to the above except using a bungee cord that jams in a thumbcleat under the tiller. I make one more modification to my rig. I tie a 75 foot line off somewhere on the transom, lead it forward and around the front of the bungee, then toss it over the transom to trail behind the boat. If I do happen to fall overboard, I have a chance to swim to and grab the line which will pull the bungee out of the thumbcleat, and allow the boat to turn head to wind and stall, while I pull myself along the line to get back on board. There is just nothing quite so sad as seeing your boat self sail itself to the distant shore without you!
