My launch spot is half a km from my house. I drove home a few days ago with the mast folded back over the transom and still in the pivot hole. It whipped around quite a bit, but it's sure convenient to leave it that way for the short trip to the water.Any advice or cautionary tales? IP: 24.64.223.203 |

OHHHHH FRED: I think that's an accident (bent mast) waiting to happen. The whipping motion will fatigue the mast very quickly and you'll be looking for a new one. My advice, secure it properly and you'll get many more sailing hours. Robert Celtic Kiss #2120 IP: 142.59.142.144 |

Just put tension on it!Sapphire's mast was usually tied at the bow and again at the cabin top. It too bounced and swayed. So, we rolled it onto it's back (luff groove down - like yours) and tied a line from the masthead to the transom. The line was loaded enough to induce a little bit of bend. The spar liked being handled like that. She didn't complain one little bit. I am sure that you are driving carefully. IP: 69.156.0.85 |

I'd be concerned about the mast foot casting and the step mounting bolt. Don't think I'd do it.IP: 142.167.230.201 |

Thanks for the good advice.I get the message, especially about metal fatigue. I'll pull the bolt and lay the mast on the boat for transport. I find the mast stays put if I lash it down at the transom and deck coaming, then tie the end to the upright that holds the trailer winch. I have to pay by total length when I take to ferry to and from Gabriola Island, where I live, so the mast goes forward to be even with the transom and hangs over the bow. IP: 24.64.223.203 |

That was another issue. Is it hard on the mast to have one end lashed to the boat and the other to the trailer? Some fear the boat & trailer will flex/bounce at different rates and could be rough on the mast. I'd play it safe and have mast touching boat at both ends. No problen with the Sandpiper, as the bow pulpit and stern rail are perfect for this purpose. Only issue is whether to support in the middle, in the cabin hatch area.

A while back I purchased some rubber holders that were intended to hold a rifle on an atv. They work great for securing a cl16 mast. $30 @ Canadian Tire.

I really like the mast supports ( er rifle holder). I think I have to do some shopping at Cdn. Tire.Robert IP: 142.59.142.144 |

I may go measure them up too just for fun. I believe my mast is 2.75" wide... I'd have to rig a way to fasten and easily remove the supports to the 7/8th" thick rails.[This message has been edited by whited (edited October 23, 2005).] IP: 142.167.230.201 |

I'll have to get a pair of rifle holders, too. The swords to ploughshares angle is kind of cool. This brings up the question of what other innovations and gadgets you-all have developed. I will post a new topic about that, specifically, I'm interested in a boom tent for sleeping on the boat. IP: 24.64.223.203 |

The holders are called Fin Grip Pro Single. I must have picked them up on sale as I just looked them up and a pair are $50 on-line at Canadian Tire. Another home made adaption you can see on the forward shot of my boat is the pogo ball I use to cover the spinaker launch and recovery tube. It looks a little silly, but it does the job.IP: 70.26.104.38 |

A clown nose is always appropriate attire. My boat has no hole up there that I've noticed. Did you put it in, or is this an option my boat lacks? I'm not sure I'm ready for a spinnaker yet. Does anyone use an asymetrical spinnaker (cruising spinnaker) on a CL 16?

Don't let the marine stores find out about the riffle holders or they'll suddenly become boat mast holders for $60.00. D'Arcy, ShortwaveIP: 67.68.51.166 |

The boat came with the tube installed. I don't know if it came from the factory this way or was installed later. I have complete spinaker gear, but have never flown it on the CL (It always seems that the conditions are too windy or too calm to fly it). The previous owner told me he had never flown it either.
