What size line for reefing system?

While ago someone posted a handy little chart on how to set up a main reefing system. I would like to attempt that, however, I am not sure what size line I should use. None came with my boat but the main sail has reefing points. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!

1/4".

I installed that reefing system on my Piper and it works great.

Hope it helps.

Wow, at least one person here reefs his main \:\) Thank you for your reply. I had already taken a wild guess and bought a 3/16" line for the reefing line (not sure about the correct terminology here) and 1/4" line for the reefing points. Hoping to set it up this weekend. Hopefully the 3/16" line works.

Re: What size line for reefing system?

I used 3/16" line for our jiffy-reefing lines. I used separate lines at leech and luff, rather than one continuous line.

This is the jiffy reefing that we use on Windy Island.

We installed the method described in Figure 2.

Hope this helps.

We have a similar system although I can't remember what size line we have. It works beautifully though. When reefed we cruise very comfortably, in control and not overpowered.

Most modern yacht braids (not purchased at Canadian Tire) have a breaking strength similar to the same diameter in steel wire. A 3/16" reefing line is not likely to break. If you go any smaller, it may be hard to grip by hand. Smaller usually has 2 advantages:
  • It's lighter (for the hardcore sailor/cruiser).
  • It will be cheaper because you pay by the pound. A 3/16" line will be less expensive than the same braid in a 5/16" line.
