Volvo Ocean Race screen shot lifted by Sandpaper, on Flickr

The 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race is about to start.

The first in-port race will be at 14:00 on Saturday, October 14 in Alicante, Spain (8:00am EDT Toronto). And although VOR is being shy about posting this on their website, we are likely to view the race live on the VOR YouTube channel.

The Leg 1 start will then be at 14:00 in Alicante on Sunday, October 22.

Mark the dates on your calendar. It's good off-season entertainment and may give inspiration to some winter projects.

I'm in countdown mode at the Volvo Ocean Race website. The broadcast starts 10 minutes before the race start (7:50 EDT).

Now that was fun!

I was able to watch the race LIVE on the Volvo Ocean Race website. I didn't see it offered at the YouTube Volvo Ocean Race channel. A link to the complete replay on YouTube is available on the VOR site. I'm sure that YouTube will post a link soon. It's worth watching on a rainy Sunday morning.

This is sort of Volvo Ocean Race related because it involves really hot racing boats; Vendee Globe in this case.
I get a text from my Brother (many of you met Kevin at the Toronto Rendezvous). It says:
"We're taking this boat out for a sail tomorrow. Do you want to come

Do I want to come!!!! Do I ever! Except for one small problem, I'm out of town on business! Darn!
Anyway, my brother had a great time sailing on Derek Hatfield's round the world sled. They were averaging 9.4 knots in 7 knots of wind. The boat is very similar to today's Volvo racers; 95 foot high mast, dual rudders and swing keel with side centre boards.
I apologize for the flipped photos. Tiny Pic is just not working very well tonight.

Well, looks like it did work. They were all sideways when I uploaded them.
Here's, another view or two.

D'Arcy! Incredible pictures (although I shudder when I see upside-down sailboat photos). What an opportunity!
The cordage on this boat is worth more than any of our Sandpipers.

What is the future for the boat? Is it still racing? Or, has it been retired to become a tourist boat?

Thanks Dennis.. I think that there's a chance we'll see this boat in the next Vendee; most likely modified a bit to be even faster..
On Saturday she topped out at 13 to 14knts when the wind picked up a bit.
I tried to post a 1 minute video but that didn't seem to work. I'll brush up on my video posting and try again.

The Lisbon in-port race starts at 14:00 UTC which is 10:00am EDT.
It will be available LIVE and FREE on the Volvo Ocean Race website.

The Leg 2 start will be at 14:00 UTC Sunday. In Canada, the clocks go back 1 hour Sunday morning, so the race time will be 9:00am EST.
Did I do that right? Sometimes I wish I lived in Saskatchewan.
That province doesn't change to daylight saving time. But there aren't a lot of sailors there.

Update on possible Canadian boat in the next Vende Globe.
I didn't know this but Derek Hatfield, O Canada's skipper tragically died due to complication in a supposedly low risk medical operation. He was a major contender in past races and it was so fantastic to have a Canadian boat in the race.
The boat changed hands a couple of times but is now owned by a sailor who is organizing a syndicate to field an entry in the next Vende.
Right now it's planned that O Canada will have a different rig (slightly shorter mast), and a new canting keel. They also plan to extend the doghouse roof back over the cockpit more to give the skipper more protection from the elements. No foils just yet.
I think the plan is if they could do well in the next Vende then they would build a new boat for the following race; with foils and hard-chinned hull (like the newer boats have).
It sure would be neat to have a Canadian boat out there.
