Hi Kyle,

will this gelcoat (when catalyzed, of course) cure when exposed to air, or does it need to have the surface covered with release film (no air exposure)?

Is it likely go match roughly with Sandpiper #925 too?

Hi Ken,

The gelcoat has an air dry additive to it so it fully cures when exposed. No need for film. It is also 'brush grade', so it can be painted on.

To Becasseau,

Yes, it is also meant for Sandpipers.

Cheers,
Kyle

Hi Kyle,
This "off white" on the can looks very beige to me, sort of darker than my hull which is like very light ivory color. I understand years later, color can change but my hull is on the original gelcoat color overall. Are we talking of the same off-white ?

I was wondering the same thing as Becasseau Kyle. The gelcoat looks more beige/cream, closer to Shortwave's deck and cabin which would be great for us but not so good for Martin's "off white" boat.

Your own gelcoat is badly oxidized and that’s why it is a chalky white. Dave tells me that the gelcoat is still made by the original supplier. We use the same supplier that created the gelcoat for the older boats, with the same code and mix. It has not changed. We've blended it seamlessly on 40 year old boats without problems, of course if the oxidization is not taken away on the old gelcoat surrounding the repair, it will be noticeable.

The end result will depend on your preparation.

The picture might be deceivingly darker than the actual colour of the gelcoat, but rest assured it is the same Off-White.

What you DO NOT want to do is try to match the colour of a new gelcoat with the old oxidized gelcoat, because it may look similar for the time being, but once buffed out, that new gelcoat will look more like a stain on your hull. With that being said, it is best to use the original colour of your boat, and CL has only ever used one Off-White blend on all of their boats.

I hope this has answered your question. Post, email or call if not!

Cheers,
Kyle

Thanks Kyle, very good info. I'm no longer going to search for that matched gelcoat for future repairs (like cockpit floor and drain upgrade). I still have some other material to find.

Hi Kyle,
Your glassman (What's his name?????) did some touch up on my boat and they are very well matched. I guess he was using this stuff ?...

Assuming time/money/opportunity can be suitably aligned, I believe I have a significant amount of gel coat and deeper repair needed. Is there any way to quantify how much area a pint will cover?

Thanks,
Charles

Gelcoat with the wax surface agent (so it will cure in free air) is known as 'topcoat'. From some Internet research, it seems that a pint of topcoat will cover very approximately 12 square feet.

Obviously, any deep and/or structural repair needs to be completed properly using polyester resin or epoxy, and glass cloth. Topcoat is the last step.

If you have alot of surface area to refinish, I'm told that Awlgrip is often chosen. Haven't yet tried it, myself.

Yes, I am aware it's only the top coat. I still have to actually somehow find time to work on the boat, figure out what needs serious work, and what only needs cosmetic touch-up...

Thanks for the response!
