  • The FISH is a Christian symbol used in the very early years of Christianity when the Believers were being persecuted by the Romans. It was not safe to be known as a Believer, especially if you were of the household of the emperor. When two people met, one would draw the lower part of the fish; the second person, if they were a Believer, would complete the symbol, thus making it safe to talk about Christianity, Jesus, or about the things that were happening in the new assembly of Believers.

  • because it's the thing to do!
  • because your Mom and/or your Dad did!
  • because you want to keep up appearances with your friends and neighbours!
  • because it's expedient to help you extend your business contacts
  • because it probably puts less demand on your time
  • because it is NON-threatening - there's no challenge to change, improve, to meet the down-and-outers! -actually it may have more "UP-and-OUTERS" than representatives of the opposite social scale!
  • because generally your LIFE-STYLE, no matter what it is, will not be questioned - e.g. Most of the traditional churches now accept a person's sexual orientation without causing any guilt feelings!
  • Actually most TRADITIONAL churches don't present enough challenge to make life interesting
  • you prefer the OLD hymn tunes
  • you have no desire to change YOUR ways nor the order of worship - you are COMFORTABLE with your 'OLD-SLIPPER' religion, no matter how worn out and ineffective the support, it seems to cover the basics.

    The Bible as we know it to-day was compiled many years later with the Old Testament being compiled in approximately 90 A.D. and the New Testament in about the 4th Century or 300 A.D. In 321 A.D. the Roman Emperor Constantine declared Christianity officially as the religion of the Roman Empire. Some of you will no doubt go scurrying for your history books as these dates are not exact! However they do give a little idea of how long it took to get the Christian Church started.

    In our 20th Century there have been established hundreds of different groups under the banner of Christianity, with many varied opinions of

  • how the scriptures came to be
  • who wrote the scriptures
  • is God - one being or is he 'three persons in one being' with the same attributes, but differing in operation
  • is Jesus the only way to the Father/God
  • is God, the Creator, interested in you and me as part of His creation
  • is God Male, Female or an It
  • the list goes on

    • Needless to say our family have some strong Christian Spiritual beliefs that have kept us sane, civilized and usually with sound judgement in most things. Return to MENU

    I am going to share here what is my FAITH walk - basic, simple understanding of the Christian WAY of Life, a WAY of Life (capital 'L') that can change your way of life (small 'l')

    You Say "There is no God"
                                                        but I know differently!

    IF you have seen EVE'S FAMILY, you know that I have been around for awhile! For 17 years now I have been learning, studying and trying to put into practice a complimentary,natural lifestyle.

    But Life (with a capital "L") began for me many years before that!

    In this space I want to give you a little of my background.

  • I was born a very poor (in a monetary way) farmer's daughter. I learned to 'make do' with simple things in life, simple food, simple pass-times, uncomplicated relationships, the church was the center of my social life until I entered high shool; the school activities became second place to my church Life although I became a 'track Star' in sporting events,etc.

    • I have had 4 brothers and 2 sisters, two brothers are now deceased. When my oldest brother at 16 years of age, left the farm to work for the Ontario Hydro, I was my father's right hand "man"! My second brother had been drowned at 14 years of age when I was just 12! I learned to drive a big Massey Tractor, even to learning how to pull the cultivator, the binder and at times I even took my turn riding the binder. My legs grew VERY STRONG; consequently I did well in athletics. (I've since tried pushing the brake pedals on that same tractor, and I can't even budge them to-day!!!)My formal public education was completed in 1956 with honours in the Ontario school system majoring in science, math and music.When I married a farmer's son who was to become a minister, my schooling in the medical field was dropped (In those days I became a bad!! risk when I married) and I became a working wife to get my PhT degree, "Putting Hubby Thru!!!"I never doubted there was a God! I saw Him in the wild flowers and the sunsets, in my baby sister's face and the softness of a kitten. So faith came easily to me. BUTAfter a few years as a minister's wife, I found some 'not-so-nice' people in the church!!!I also was used as a 'human guinea pig' via the medical folk who gave me (at that time) an experimental drug called CORTISON to regulate menstration!!! It didn't do the job.!! Instead it did 'a number' on my nervous system later to produce two nervous breakdowns!!
  • In 1967-68 I went through a very deep valley of DEPRESSION! Where once I could sing and play before people, I no longer could! Where once I organized meetings, I was unable to meet with the people. I just wanted to hide! My kindly doctor put me on VALIUM, 3 or 4 a day, to help me cope!! although I don't think I was Valium-deficient!!
  • In the summer of 1968, in search of healing and a deeper, spiritual life, the Lord gave me HIMSELF, in an experience so real, that NO ONE can tell me GOD IS NOT REAL!

    • The Valium was gone! I was healed physically, emotionally and spiritually! I was filled with a great joy! and life took on a new dimension, a complete 180 degree turn!

  • For the next 12 years, I witnessed many amazing ACTS OF GOD -miraculous healing where people should have died, life-changing happenings to people who previously were miserable, unhappy, addicted to alcohol, drugs, tobacco, food, (YOU NAME IT!) who became positive testimonies to their friends, families, neighbours, in the work place, in their churches, etc.
  • We had two adopted children, lost a baby through late miscarriage, then had two lovely girls by natural birth BUT LIFE DID NOT GET EASIER!!
  • I took my place in the interchurch community via The Christian Ashram Movement and the TELECARE TELEPHONE COUNSELLING program plus other types of interchurch activities.

    • BUT I CONSISTENTLY HAD TRAUMAS HAPPENING IN MY OWN LIFE!!!

  • In 1980 following several months of extreme STRESS with our two oldest children and some difficulties in our congregation, I broke down again!!!
  • My question was not

    • Where is God?

    but

    What are trying to teach me now, Lord??


    I had learned throught the years, that

     LIFE'S EXPERIENCES HAPPEN!!!.
    We just have to wait and see what we are to learn through them!!!

    Romans 5:3 says "we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance (patience), and endurance (patience) produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us." Quote RSV, brackets by author!

    For 8 months, while one of my congregation kept saying he had something to share with me, "BUT I WASN"T READY!!!", I took chemical balance pills, sleeping pills and fiorinal with codeine, a very potent pain reliever. (As Dr. E. Watkins would say, I really wasn't deficient in any of these drugs!!!!") I was a very angry , unhappy person!!! a very impatient person!!! but I waited it out!
    There is a saying that

    "WHEN YOU GET TO THE END OF YOUR ROPE, TIE A KNOT AND HANG ON!"


    that's what I did while saying to the Lord, what DO you want me to learn from this experience.
    My GP playing at junior psychologist decided that my children were disobedient, I was a disobedient patient (I didn't want to stay on his drugs!#&!) and my husband obviously couldn't "KEEP ME UNDER CONTROL" (the doctor was Oriental), and that I should find another doctor!!@##$$

  • When I returned home with this further challenge in my life, I called a friend to ask her to pray for me! Immediately a voice said, "Call George!" that was the parishioner who had said "I wasn't ready!". So I called George. He came over to my home and started to talk about

    • DIET, HERBS and Alternative or Complimentary modalities.

    Now some of those last ones are a little scary! After all I was a 'dyed in the wool' medical person. I did think he had gone off the deep end!!! himself, BUT
    HE WORKED AT THE HOSPITAL,
    HIS DOCTOR HAD REFERRED HIM TO USING HERBS, he was a charismatic, evangelical Christian who seemed to have his head on his shoulders quite straight and
    in those days, I still thought that doctors could do no wrong, sort of Mini Dieties (M.D.'s!!)
    Maybe this was something worth looking into!!!
  • To make a long story short, I went to see the Herbalist/Iridologist. She gave me one combination of herbs and

    • IN THREE DAYS I WAS OFF THE CHEMICAL BALANCE PILLS;
    IN ONE WEEK I WAS OFF THE STRONG SLEEPING PILLS AND 
    I HAVE NOT HAD A PRESCRIPTION FOR FIORINAL SINCE 1980!!!!!!!

    GOD HAPPENED AGAIN!!, HE WAS WATCHING OVER ME AND Again My life took a 180 degree turn for the good. I had no doubt that HE, MY LORD, had arranged the whole thing!!!

    Personally I believe ALL OF LIFE'S EXPERIENCES are allowed to happen in order for us to GROW WITHIN OURSELVES OR IN OUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE FATHER GOD AND THOSE WITH WHOM WE COME INTO CONTACT EVERYDAY. One thing is for sure, this attitude can sure help you through some pretty bad experiences!!!

  • Is there anything out there in the universe that will answer the craving or spiritual hunger that has you asking


    • who am I, 
    do I have a place in history and, ultimately, 
    who is God?

    One theologian (that's a person who is learned in the science of understanding God and His relation to man - The Oxford Dictionary) has said

    "There is no KNOWN hunger where there isn't something created to meet that hunger."

    This is a natural law!! Try putting it into practice.

     e.g. I have a brain - a highly intelligent piece of 'meat' filled with nerves that can think, reason, study, move a hand or a foot, experience hot and cold, is electrically charge!! etc. The natural law says there will be many opportunities in life to meet the need to learn, to act, to move. Just sit very still, quiet your thinking! and note what happens (i)from within (ii)from the world around you. We humans tend to focus on the negative things, rather than on the positive!

    That craving or hunger whether for spiritual or physical things, MUST HAVE DIRECTION! Therefore we need a STARTING POINT, an Orientation. You may say "there is NO God!, therefore I have NO orientation!, no PLACE from which to START". If this is your basic belief, you are, of all people, most to be pitied for you have rejected the Power, the Person, who made you IN YOUR BEGINNING, who created you out of two miscroscopic entities that met in a dark place in your mother's body, to form a living being, a person.
     

    You will be at cross-purposes with REALITY and you are bound to get hurt. You have a Vacuum-shaped place within you that desires to be filled by its Creator,

    to complete you and

    to give you Purpose to Live.

    A friend of ours puts it this way-
    "Religion says: you desire basically a reunion with God - i.e. the FATHER GOD. You are homesick! You are like lungs without air, a heart without love, a landscape without beauty, YOU ARE STARVED!! irritable and unhappy without HOPE in a world gone mad!!
      When you cannot accept the Reality of GOD, you will try to rationalize your standpoint by setting up SCAPEGOATS - something or someone to bear the blame for your unbelief - "My mother beat me! If God is real and he made mother's to love and not harm their children, then mother was bad and she has warped my personality" or "When great tradgedies strike, for example, the many students killed in China because of their revolt against dictatorship, where was God when this happened? The human machine without feelings is to blame but we would prefer to blame THE GOD WE DO NOT FEEL EXISTS!!
     

    The kids on the streets in Toronto, or any other city, must be there because their parents weren't nice people!!! Blame the parents! but there are choices in life, many choices
    for every BAD CHOICE, there is a GOOD CHOICE when we are open to see and hear!
    You know the cup is half FULL (the positive) or the cup is half EMPTY(the negative). In the Holy scriptures, Adam looked for a Scapegoat when he got into trouble with the Creator, and blamed his wife, EVE. She in turn looked to the serpent as her excuse.
     
     

     WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR YOUR LACK OF DIRECTION, YOUR LACK OF A FAITH POINT?
    Your Mom,
    Your teachers,
    Some tragedy that you suffered,
    life itself,
    fate!!
    the stars.
    "As if lumps of matter floating in space could decide the destiny, for good or ill, of a FREE MORAL AGENT like yourself."
    the environment or
    the unseen GOD of the universe ???

    Since you were created with a FREE WILL, you can choose not to let any of these Scapegoats keep you from THE HIGHER WAY, or
    you can choose to stay in the mud!!

    Whatever you DO, or you choose, you have to live with the consequences! unless?? there is a better way!

    IS THERE A BETTER WAY?

    YOU CAN MAKE THE DECISION, 
    IT IS YOURS TO CHOOSE, 
    TO GO THE WAY OF GOD, OR THE WAY OF 'NO GOD'.

    In this choice lies Good or Evil, self love or self destruction, Life or death, HOPE or NO HOPE, BUT THE DECISION IS STILL YOURS keeping in mind you will also be choosing the consequences of your choice!

    On the TV this past week there was a documentary on the prisons in Moscow of the old U.S.S.R. The misery, the abuse of strong men, and wasted lives when living under a godless regime is part of the consequences of CHOOSING "NO GOD". Outside the prisons is hopelessness, crime running rampid in the streets, children starving, no medicines in the hospitals, little or no food for the worker, ALL CONSEQUENCES OF CHOOSING 'NO GOD'.

    As we see our western world gradually deteriorating to the same level (it won't take long now that the worship of God has been removed from the schools.) we are seeing more and more of the same Hopelessness, Crime, Abuse, (physical, psychological, spiritual, medical) in business, small and large going bankrupt, we are seeing the destruction of our democratic society due to the lack of teaching MORAL VALUES that are now BASICALLY ONLY TAUGHT IN THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

    Think about it! Do you want your world and the world of the 21st century to be like the world our Russian friends are now living in? This is the consequences of a GODLESS SOCIETY.

    My homesickness for my heavenly Father is going to lead me to Him.

    If I try to find Scapegoats, in the end, I know I shall become the goat!The first condition of success is to assume responsibility for myself.

    Today I shall give my attention to only the part of my environment that I desire to allow to influence me. I have been and am WHAT I HAVE DECIDED TO BE; today I decide to be a different person, a new person.

    I have been a divided personality always fighting the conscience within that tries to order my life. I have been two; now I'm becoming one with myself and the God who created me. 

    GOD IS DISTURBING ME

    like a person who has taken an overdoes of sleeping pills is afraid to lie down, for fear he will never wake up again. So the Everlasting Creator pursues us, sometimes sets us at war with our lower selves, disturbs us until we beg to be let alone - to die. BUT love will not let us die

    He prods you into becoming a Transformed Person. As long as the prod is there, you keep asking the questions - the Person is there waiting for you, for your decision.

    My studies have led me to look at this absolutely amazing piece of machinery called
    THE BODY - Human and Animal
    When I use a computer, I do not doubt that someone out there had enough knowledge to program such an amazing piece of equipment. BUT the computer is only as intelligent and accurate as its creator/programmer. But what of the HUMAN BODY - SOME INTELLIGENCE, POWER, PERSON, out there!! HAD TO BE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO CREATE IT!
    Just look at its complexities! Could it have JUST HAPPENED?
    The astonomer finds the answer at the end of his telescope with its astronomical view of space.
    The physicist finds the answer under his microscope as she observes creatures too small for the human eye to see.
    The new mother finds the answer as she looks into the face of her newborn babe sensing the awe and wonder of what she has carried within her womb for 9 months - the perfect tiny fingers and toes!
    The farmer finds the answer as he cultivates and plants tiny seeds by faith that as the Creator warms the soil and waters the seeds, at harvest time, that seed will have multiplied 30, 50 or 100 fold.
    Even the computer programmer can find the answer in the knowledge that his signal will be transported through the air from one place to another, knowing that even though the message may be fragmented in its space travel, it will come together at the server to which it was sent.
