ThePhilosophy

In recent years there has been an increasing trend toward holistic and natural health care, and a move away from the intense analytical approach of modern medicine.

AHealthyDefinition

To be healthy is to be whole. The word health comes from the same root as the word whole. But many people think that if no illness is apparent, they must be healthy. They really never think about health until after they become sick!

Health involves three important concepts: balance, harmony and joy. A healthy person possesses all the elements needed for good health. When we are whole, balanced and harmonized, the result is a wonderful feeling of well-being. Health isn't just the absence of disease; it goes beyond just feeling normal. To be truly healthy is to have a zest for life and the ability to enjoy wholesome, joyful activity.

OneVitalKey toHealth:GoodNutrition

Although there are many principles of good health, one of the most important is proper nutrition. Wise food selection is critical to good health. Hippocrates, considered to be the father of medicine, taught that illness results from man's inability to properly digest his food and eliminate waste.

This view is the foundation of every modern natural-health philosophy. Scientific research shows that diet is definitely related to chronic and degenerative diseases. (For more information, see Diet and Health: Implications for Reducing Chronic Disease Risk, written by the Committee on Diet and Health, National Research Council and published by the National Academy Press, Washington, D.C.,1989. "A comprehensive review...indicates that diet influences the risk of several major chronic diseases.") Primitive people around the world have different diets and lifestyles, yet they're not plagued by some of the diseases rampant in Western culture.
Diet and environment play a vital part in health.

What kind of dietary changes should people make? Begin by avoiding the four whites: refined sugar, refined flour, salt and shortening (or highly hydrogenated and saturated fats). The best way to get these foods out of the diet is to gradually replace them with healthier substitutes. And, of course, avoid smoking and alcohol consumption.

Instead, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes--and consume meat sparingly. In general, the closer foods are to their natural state, the better for you they will be.

The ability to absorb dietary nutrients is only part of being healthy; the body also needs to eliminate toxic waste. Hence, healthy elimination is part of good nutrition. Many people may discount the importance of waste elimination, but it's just as imporant as assimilating the right nutrients.

A very successful American herbalist in the 1800s, Samuel Thomson, compared the body to a furnace. A furnace needs air and fuel, burns it to create energy and eliminates the smoke while the ash falls away. If high-quality fuel and enough oxygen are used in the furnace, it will burn clean and hot with a minimum of waste. But if poor fuel or too little air is used, the fuel will smolder and produce a great deal of ash and smoke. Our bodies are like that, too.

Actually, the body is a high-performance machine made to burn high-performance fuel and produce large amounts of energy. But it doesn't work efficiently if we throw in low-grade fuel like so-called junk foods. Many people complain that they are tired and don't have enough energy to do what they want to do. At the same time, they are using low-quality fuel and their internal furnaces are burning poorly. Natural health care not only seeks to provide a nutritious diet, but also to open up the eliminative channels to keep the internal furnace hot and clean.

The process is complex, but the idea is simple.

When basic concepts of natural health are applied, the body can usually take care of its natural processes with amazing efficiency.

And almost anyone can understand and follow these simple, tried-and-true principles of health.

Health&Herbs

Millions of people use herbs regularly, believing they offer a great measure of health and well-being. Dandelions, burdock, marshmallow, comfrey leaves and alfalfa have all been used as food. Unfortunately, many of these wonderful plants have lost favor in the eyes of Western man, whose tastes have become accustomed to an unwholesome, highly refined regimen.

In order to add to the research that has been done on the nutritional value of herbs, Nature's Sunshine Products has undertaken studies to verify the long standing historical belief in herbal nutrition. Alfalfa, for example, is a rich source of many trace minerals. The plant contains large amounts of phosphorus, sulfur, copper, cobalt, molybdenum, iron, boron, sodium, fluorine, chlorine and strontium. It is also a source of vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E, pro-vitamin A(beta-carotene), folic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin. Pyridoxine and choline are also present in varying amounts. This is not all, Alfalfa contains flavonoids, lipids, chlorophyll, volatile oils, proteins, sugars, starches, organic acids, alkaloids, saponins and is a good source of fiber. Every one of these elements is processed in the human body, even if the required amount is minute.

Edward Shook, an herbalist and biochemist who lived earlier in this century, is one of the few reseachers who based his work mainly on the nutritional value of herbs. In his Advance Treatise of Herbology, Dr.Shook argues eloquently that herbs are sources of organic compounds (or foods) which the tissues of the body can use to build, repair and maintain themselves. His premise is that herbs are sources of nutrients (especially minerals) which are vital in maintaining the health of the body.

As modern science progressed to the point where it can say with positive assurance that the rich and varied substances in the simple herbs of the field are not important to our health? Certainly not. Herbs were valued by our ancestors and they continue to be valued by healthy people the world over. Perhaps we need them even more today, to help make up for our polluted water, dirty air and adulterated food.

A SystemApproach

The body is actually a community composed of billions of living organisms called cells. Each requires a constant supply of oxygen, nutrients, pure water and just the right temperature. To complete the system, waste must also be removed. If cells are not supported, they will die.

It is impossible for each cell to supply its own needs. In order to perform specialized functions, each type of cell is organized in a beautiful system of interdependence for the good of the whole. For example, some cells are grouped to specialize in supplying food to the whole community (the digestive system). Others are adapted to coordinate the pumping of fresh air into the community and the removing of stale air (the respiratory system).

Because of the specialized nature of these cells, their nutritional needs may be different, depending on their activities. For example, the structural system needs more silica and calcium, while the kidney's filtering system requires more sodium and potassium. If the various specialized systems aren't supplied with the correct elements, they can't perform their unique functions. When this happens, the whole community is affected. As the body's harmony begins to break down, various symptoms appear. These symptoms are commonly called disease, meaning "the lack of ease."

UnderstandingChineseHerbalFormulas

Nature's Sunshine recognizes the unique benefits of both the Eastern and Western health care philosophies. The primary intent of Chinese herbal formulas is to provide nutritional support for harmony and balance in the body. For more than 5,000 years Chinese herbalists have carefully observed the nutritional advantages of herbs and learned how to blend them carefully to meet the needs of people according to their constitutional differences.

Based on the principles of yin and yang, or contraction and expansion, the Chinese herbal system is one major example of how ancient concepts are being confirmed by new research. Of major importance is the concept of treating each person as unique, rather than assuming that good results for one person will automatically help everyone else the same way. Another Chinese concept gaining attention in the Western world is the idea of treating the whole person, not just one of his symptoms. This includes other seemingly unrelated symptoms, and his emotional makeup as well.

We are pleased to bring the expertise of Chinese experience and success to the Western world. Nature's Sunshine has a number of Chinese herbal formulas, which are all listed with C after the product name. In addition, many of Nature's Sunshine's own formulas incorporate the time-honored principles of Chinese herbology.

The Nature's Sunshine Company approaches nutrition from a Body systems analogy and suggest that there are KEY NATURAL or NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS to support each system believing that THE BODY IS ONLY AS STRONG AS ITS WEAKEST SYSTEM --an holistic approach to be used with the analytical approach.

Their products are listed  on another sight in groups with the body systems they nutritionally support. This will help you think of our products as foods, to be used for the special needs of various body systems.

Instead of dividing the human body into countless parts and listing a multitude of incredibly intricate activities within the body, we need to see ourselves as whole working units. We cannot and do not exist in pieces. We take care of the body best as a whole unit.

TheNature'sSunshineStory

NATURE'S SUNSHINE PRODUCTS, INC. began as a kitchen enterprise for Gene and Kristine Hughes and other members of the Hughes family in Provo, Utah. Their first efforts involved hand-filling capsicum herb powder into small, empty capsules. Working for three successive nights, the family managed to produce 3,000 capsules (30 bottles). A friend printed some labels. Not counting their many hours of labor, the 30 bottles of capsicum represented an investment of $30. Six bottles were sold to a health food store and the rest to a grocery store for $1.15 per bottle. The grand total of their profit, excluding the man-hours invested, was an astounding $4.50.

From this humble beginning in 1972, the Hughes' operation blossomed into an international corporation with distributors in all 50 states, Canada, New Zealand, Austalia, Mexico and the United Kingdom, with export sales to many other countries. More than 225,000 people have become Independent Nature's Sunshine distributors, participating in a generous network marketing program.

Building on its success with herbs, the company extended the product line to include vitamins, nutritional supplements and dietary aids, (homeopathic remedies, skin- and hair-care products - not available in Canada at the present time) and water treatment systems. Today there are more than 200 natural products available in Canada, all designed to promote health and vitality. Nature's Sunshine has long been recognized and remains, a world leader throughout the health and nutrition industry.
