"LINKS " is . . .

Links Newsletter

A North American primary educational newsletter written by teachers for teachers. This is an exciting new concept that various educational authorities have accepted (though they call them by different names). In Ontario, Canada it is called "The Provincial Curriculum". In New York State "N.Y.S. Curriculum Instruction and Assessment Frameworks". In many parts of Europe the agenda is the same. In England it is called "The National Curriculum". Many Independent School Districts have set their "Missions" or "Strategic Plans" based on the same concept.

"LINKS" newsletters are designed to assist and supplement a primary teacher's own knowledge, experience and classroom values. It is written to be used by the experienced or a teacher new to the system. It saves time and provides many resources.

Each newsletter provides:

Teachers who read LINKS save time, accumulate instant resources, and receive an entire theme in each issue that can be edited or developed.

 Family Fun Boxes

It is important that math, science, and technology are connected to a child's real world, and through these "fun box" activities the children will find out how math is used e.g. on bills and menus, how science is used in e.g. food preparation, or how technology is used in e.g. designing things for their use.

A student takes home a container filled with activities that have been created by classroom teachers to involve the whole family in literature-based mathematical and scientific learning. Each activity begins with a story or book, followed by a fun-filled activity featuring a math, science or technology component.

Each box has a journal where parents or caregivers are encouraged to offer their comments.

Each kit contains 10 activity cards along with 10 matching journal covers. Each card has suggestions for books or stories to accompany the activity, a list of the materials needed, and the instructions for the activity. Also included in the kit are instructions for setting up the Family Fun Box program, important Do's and Don'ts and a sample letter to send to parents or caregivers.

Each kit is $12.00. There are 4 kits available. To order click here

Shirts and Buttons Game

This kit consists of a Matrix or game-board, 36 shirt cards in 4 different colours, and 9 labelling cards, plus activity suggestions to use with your students. The activities are open-ended and lend themselves to use with Kindergarten to Grade 3 students.

When a child first learns to classify he or she has to recognize and identify the objects, take note of particular features and then react to that information. It may be the colour, size, or shape and the activity would be to group according to the criteria chosen. After learning to classify using one criteria a student progresses by classifying the same objects in several ways. More advanced students are able to set their own objectives, anticipate the results and solve problems independently.
