'D'

The letter 'D' is based on an upright (letter ' I ') and an ellipse

'V & W'

The letter 'V' is formed from two straight lines.

Put a slight curve into the start of the first line.

Slightly rotate the pen to a flatter angle at the end of the second line

The letter 'W' is basically two letter 'V's

'M & N'

The letter 'M' consists, essentially, of four straight lines.
Add a slight curve as shown to make the letter a little less static

The letter 'N' consists, essentially, of three straight lines.
Add a slight curve as shown to make the letter a little less static

'U'

The letter 'U' consists of two stright lines and a curved section.
The curved section can be approximated by parts of two ellipses as shown.

'X'

The letter 'X' consists of two straight lines

'Y'

The letter 'Y' consists of three straight lines
