RULES & REGULATIONS

Revised January, 2008

Each member must certify that he/she has read
and fully understood these rules and regulations
by printing and completing the
ACCEPTANCE FORM

regulations and safety reminders are clearly posted

IMPORTANT NOTE
All shooting at the club will be done with the main gate being open. Any member entering on to club property must make sure the main gate (at club entrance) is open. This indicates to any other club member (entering driveway) and our neighbours that the range is open. Failure to do so may be cause for our neighbours to call police and warn of trespassers.
  1. First one entering must change the sign at the top of the hill to "CAUTION RANGE IN USE". Last one leaving must change sign to "RANGE CLOSED" and lock the gate on the way out.

  2. All members must "sign in" when they arrive at the club. Sign-in sheets on clip board will be kept in club house on centre post. Print date, time in, full name, FAC or Possession License number, and badge number on sheet. We must keep records.

  3. All members must wear their membership badges when on club property.

  4. Club members are responsible for their guests with regard to instruction on firearms safety and club rules. Guest form must be filled out (see guest rules, below). We must keep records.

  5. "Range officer" is the individual who oversees the shooting activities at the firing line. A blackboard has been installed in the indoor and the outdoor range. If two or more members are shooting, one must be designated "range officer" and the member must print his/her name on the blackboard. If that person leaves, another is designated "range officer" and puts his/her name on the blackboard. The "range officer" oversees shooting activities on the firing line (1 indoor & 1 outdoor) and makes sure all club rules and regulations are being followed.

    indoor

  6. Coming to and from the firing line, firearms are to be unloaded and completely clear of all ammunition. Firearms should not be handled or prepared for firing except at the firing line.

  7. Any firearms requiring maintenance shall be removed from the firing line to a designated safe area. Safe areas are marked with signs on outdoor range and indoor range.

  8. Shoot only proper targets that have been approved by our club. At no time shall any member or guest discharge his/her firearm at target stands or frames, metal cans, glass bottles, or any such material that may cause dangerous debris or bullet ricochets.

  9. All shots fired must be aimed in such a manner as to cause projectile to hit the backstop.

  10. At no time will the muzzle of a loaded firearm be higher than the backstop so as to cause projectile to leave the range.

  11. Before anyone goes "down range", all firearms are to be laid on bench, muzzle forward, action open and empty with magazine removed.

  12. No handling of firearms when people are downrange. Stay behind the yellow line.

  13. No shooting from ahead of the firing line.

  14. Eye and ear protection should be worn by all shooters and spectators in reasonable proximity of the shooting line.

  15. In the event of a misfire, the shooter shall keep the muzzle of the firearm pointed downrange for a period of 60 seconds prior to clearing the firearm.

  16. Always check the barrel for obstruction before you shoot the firearm. If, when fired, the report does not sound right, check the barrel again for obstruction before you continue shooting.

  17. When shooting, only 5 rounds of ammunition are allowed in a magazine or cylinder.

  18. No person shall attend our club or discharge any firearm on club property while apparently under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

  19. Any shooter on the firing line must call a cease-fire at any time that he/she observes an unsafe condition.

  20. "Jacketed" bullets are to be fired outdoors only using the 70 metre cross range position. Do not shoot "jacketed" bullets at either the 50 metre position or in the indoor range.

  21. No shooting outdoors before 9:00 a.m. or after dusk.

  22. Only .22 caliber shooting is allowed outdoors on Sundays.

  23. No shooting of human shaped targets.

  24. No restricted rifles or prohibited firearms (under 4" barrels excepted) are allowed on club property.

  25. No wearing of holsters. This club is designed for bulls-eye type target shooting, not PPC or IPSC shooting.

  26. No shotgun shooting in the indoor range.

  27. "Target loads" only in the indoor range. No magnum loads or "jacketed" bullets.

  28. Indoor range has safety lights. Green light indicates cease-fire (no shooting). Red light indicates a live fire situation (shooting in progress).

  29. Indoor range also has a sign as you enter. First person in turns sign to "CAUTION RANGE OPEN". Last person out turns sign to "RANGE CLOSED".

  30. Outdoor shotgun shooting must be done using common sense. Shotguns are fired from the covered stand past the 70 metre cross range position. You may fire shotguns on non-regular days using clay birds, but shots must be fired in such a manner that all pellets are kept within the confines of the outdoor range. Move any target stands or other objects that might be in the path of the pellets. Shot size cannot be larger than # 7 1/2 and powder charge cannot be more than 3 1/4 drams.

  31. High powered rifles and handguns using "jacketed" bullets must be fired from the 70 metre cross range position only. That bench is constructed so that it has an overhead baffle so that the firearm cannot be turned in an unsafe manner and cannot be raised higher than the backstop. An earth backstop is contructed for that position and targets will be hung in front of that backstop only.

WE ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE AS CLUB MEMBERS
TO ENFORCE SAFE FIREARMS HANDLING
Any person who deliberately fails to handle and/or discharge firearms in a safe manner or who violates club rules and regulations shall be removed from the club property immediately. Subsequent violations may result in suspension of range privileges or termination of his/her club membership.

HANDGUNS

You must have an "Authorization to Transport" to bring handguns to the club. Handguns must be transported in a locked case (individually locked), unloaded, with ammunition in a separate container. Transport in a locked trunk, away from driver and/or passengers.

IMPORTANT - LIABILITY INSURANCE

As a member of Maple Leaf Gun Club, membership in the Canadian Shooting Sports Association is mandatory. See Annual Dues for details. This is because all individual MLM club members and directors/executive will now have liability insurance through the Canadian Shooting Sports only and not through our club. Members who have not paid their club membership dues by December of each year and are not paid up CSSA members have no liability insurance and will not be allowed to shoot or have guests shoot until membership is paid for new year.

Key CSSA services and benefits for members:
