March 2005: The Meaning of Easter
Spring is a favourite time of year for many people in our part of the world. They enjoy the returning warm weather, the new flowers, indeed, the burst of new life in all the sectors of the natural world all around us. One Part of spring, that the Church of Jesus Christ celebrates, is the Season of Easter. For us Easter is much more than just the Easter bunny with his eggs, or even the Chocolate rush in the season. It is when we rejoice in the Good news that Jesus was raised to new life after being killed on the Cross. We Celebrate that God has given us a very important message regarding eternal life. For centuries people had wondered and debated on the question of life after death. Some thought that there was life and others thought that death was the final end, the cold abyss of darkness. Even today many people still offer theories and conjectures about life after death. Some suggest that there is a form of life after death, but they see it as only a transition time and place before you are reborn into this world. They believe in the necessity of multiple life times on this planet where we have to live out our human destiny till we get it right. Only those who are perfect in this life get to go on to another plane of existence that is somehow better. Since those who offer you this knowledge are not perfect themselves, they have only vague ideas about what this other life is all about. In the Church of Jesus Christ we are thankful that we have been freed from this kind of questioning and thinking. We rejoice that the know about the Kingdom of Heaven because of the teachings of Jesus. We look forward to getting to enter the Kingdom of Heaven when we die because he has told us that he has gone on ahead of us to prepare a place for us there. We don't have to get it right perfectly while we are here because Jesus did, and He has promised that by accepting his offer, his gift of forgiveness and new life, we can enter into Heaven and not be doomed to an endless cycle of rebirths into this world. If you want to know more about the Kingdom of God than you only have to start to read the Gospels at the beginning of the New Testament in a Bible. They tell the story of Jesus life and teachings. There we learn the basics of this new life that God has offered freely to us. If you want to know more than please consider coming to church each Sunday as we try to learn more about this new life in Christ that is available to us. If you have other questions we would love to talk to you, so please feel free to contact us. In the mean time, enjoy spring and listen to the hope message that God is trying to give you. Rev. Tijs, at St. Giles Presbyterian Church.
