Important Considerations

We have had questions in the past such as 'What is the main page called?' There are a few different answers to this. If your page takes advantage of EHTML (the Extended Hyper Text Markup Language) as detailed on the Vaxxine WWW - Services to Clients Pages, then your main page needs to be named default.eht. If you do not make use of any of the EHTML commands, you can name the main page default.htm or index.htm. We strongly recommend that you use default.htm since this name is understood by both the standard and secure (SSL) WWW servers used by Vaxxine.

Sub-pages that have EHTML coding need to have a .eht extension, where normal HTML pages can have a .htm extension.

All of your pages can be in your 'main' Web directory, or you can create sub-directories to organize different areas of your site. This includes items such as graphics, sound files, zipped files or CGI programs.

Getting started...

  Requesting Your WWW Space

The first step is to request that we create an area for you to upload your Web Page to. We have this Page Creation Request Form that you can fill out and send to us.

Please note that you can only have one "top level" page (i.e. http://www.vaxxine.com/yourpage).

Uploading Your Pages

There are many programs that help Web Developers create their Web Sites. Some of these programs have built-in facilities for uploading your pages. Since we cannot possibly know how to configure each one of these, we will provide instructions on how to upload your pages to our site using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.

Technical support cannot provide specific instructions on the upload of your page using a Web Design program. These programs (such as the design program in Netscape Gold or Microsoft FrontPage) are excellent for creating and maintaining your site, but sometimes the upload of your site using them can be difficult.

Download an FTP Client

There are dozens of different FTP clients available on the Internet. Although we can't provide instructions for each one, they are generally the same and the instructions that we provide should allow you to configure yours to be able to upload your site.

Windows 95 (32-bit) - If you are using Dial-Up Networking to connect to the Internet, you can use a 32-bit FTP client. We recommend using either CuteFTP Version 2.0 or WS FTP-LE. Either of these two programs are perfect for transferring your pages to our server.

Windows 3.1x (16-bit) - If you are using Windows 3.1x with any connection software or Windows 95 with Trumpet Winsock, you will have to use a 16-bit FTP client. We recommend using the 16-bit counterpart to either of the above two links, CuteFTP Version 2.0 or WS FTP-LE. If you are unsure if you are using a 16-bit or a 32-bit connection then download the WS FTP-LE client, as it has both versions.

Macintosh - We would recommend using Fetch Version 3.0 (you will need a program such as StuffIt to decompress Fetch).

Other FTP Clients - If you want a bigger selection of FTP Clients to choose from, try the TUCOWS site. Click the appropriate Operating System, then click FTP. There are dozens of FTP Clients, some better than others.

Configuring Your FTP Client and Uploading Your Pages

OK, great, now I have this FTP Client downloaded and installed. How do I configure it?

Every FTP Client is a bit different. We have specific instructions for using CuteFTP and WS FTP-LE. Click the appropriate link below.

Please Note: Technical support cannot provide specific instructions if you do not use one of these programs.

Now What?

Now that your Web Pages have been uploaded, they are available to the World. If you type in your Web Page URL (Web Master's Note: URL is NOT pronounced Earl, as in the name, remember that...) in your Web Browser, you page should be displayed. There are a number of different problems that can crop up...

  • You get an error message: Read the list of possible explanations before panicking. There is probably a very good reason why your page doesn't appear.
  • Your page displays, but the images don't: Did you upload the images? Did you upload the images in Binary, NOT ASCII? Remember that UNIX is case-sensitive, where DOS is not. If you have a graphic named TITLE.JPG and you reference this graphics as TITLE.jpg, it will appear as a broken image. The easiest thing to do is name everything in lower-case.

There are many other errors that can appear. If you can't figure it out by yourself, feel free to contact the Web Master explaining the problem. We will try our best to help.

Other Web Services

An excellent area for Web information relating to Vaxxine's Web Services can be found on the Vaxxine World Wide Web - Services To Clients site. This site has information on a ton of HTML related information for all Web Designers...

As you may have seen, we have an area where we list pages on our server, both the Personal Web Pages of our clients and the Business Pages as well. You will find links on these pages to add your page listing.

Graphical Counters

Graphical counters are available at Vaxxine. Check out our Graphical Counter Information Page for more information.
