Installation Under Windows ME

Internet Software Installation Under Windows ME

Prior to installation, please ensure you have your Windows ME CD-ROM available. Depending on your system's configuration, the Vaxxine setup program may need to install certain Windows components from this CD.

You should also check that your modem has been correctly identified and installed by Windows ME. If you purchased your computer with ME pre-installed, this should already be done for you. Otherwise, you may need the installation CD or Floppy disk for your modem, supplied by your vendor.

Differences Between Windows 95/98 and Windows ME:

If you are already familiar with setting up Dial-Up Networking under Windows 95 and 98, there are a few differences in Windows ME. Most notably, the Dial-Up Networking components are now located in the Control Panel instead of My Computer.

Installation:

  1. Follow the installation instructions for Windows 95/98 as provided with your startup kit. The install procedure is almost identical for Windows ME.
  2. The installation program will ask you which Web Browser you would like to install. Since Windows ME comes with Internet Explorer 5.5 (which is the latest version at the time of writing) you will only be able to select between Netscape and Use Currently Installed Browser. Click Next to continue.
  3. Enter your personal information, including username, password and full name when prompted.
  4. If your modem was not previously installed, the Add Modems Wizard will appear. If you do not have the CD or floppy from your modem manufacturer, or are not comfortable installing drivers, you should contact your vendor for assistance. If you've upgraded from a previous version of Windows, it is possible that your modem may not be supported by ME without a driver upgrade from the manufacturer.
  5. The setup program will now attempt to install the required Windows Networking components if they are not already available. At this point, you may be prompted to provide your Windows ME CD, so that the required files may be copied to your system. If you receive an error indicating that a file being copied is older than one already on your system, click YES to keep the current file.
  6. Finally, you will be prompted to reboot your system.

Important Note:

After rebooting your system, please be sure to follow the instructions in the Addendum provided to you with your Internet startup kit. These steps are necessary to ensure that the Vaxxine script file is properly installed on your system.
