Back in the mid 40's when I was in the lower grades of high school, I was tending to be a smart aleck, (I know a lower part of the anatomy is the term used now). I made some so-called smart remarks on a Latin exam, (I hated Latin), and they came to the attention of my math teacher who was a strict disciplinarian and rather abrupt in his demeanor. He made it abundantly clear to myself and several others that this behavior was not only inappropriate, but would not be tolerated. All of us were to show up for after school classes in "math" until he said they were over.

In those days discipline in the classroom was the norm and there was no doubt in our minds that we should attend these classes, and we did. Once the doors were closed, he taught us Latin – all who were there had terrible marks on their test – which he named Math extra. We all learned Latin and passed subsequent tests with flying colours.

Again, in the late 40's in grade 13, I had been accepted into Predental year at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. I had most of the funds necessary but was short $300 and desperate to get the money. Our high school principle loaned me the money from his own pocket to get started.

There is no doubt in my mind that my life might have been very different if these two men had not intervened on my behalf. Nothing was asked for in return, but I am left with a debt of conscience for the rest of my life. I will not repay this debt to these men, unless it is by working on payment of my debts of conscience, but I will continue to pass on what I can to others and in that way they will then have the same kind of debts.

Hopefully, this website will help some of you gain inspiration to the best in life, and in that way I can work off some of the debt I owe. All of us have debts of this type, and most of us have been paying them off for years. A few will not bother and will be left without that wonderful inner feeling that comes from helping others. Try it — you might like it.

I consider this message important. The more who live in this way, the better our world will be. Transportation and the Internet have tended to make all the world more accessible to everyone and it is an advantage for us to cooperate rather than compete. Please pass it on.
