Comforting Thoughts For Living – Page 3

Begin the Day with God

Every morning, lean your arms awhile upon the window-sill of heaven and gaze upon the Lord. Then, with the vision in your heart, turn strong, to meet thy day. Thomas Blake

A Bulwark of Strength

One must hope that each of us might increase our capacity for greater humility, that we might become more mature and hence give more of ourselves, and, in a broad sense, love more effectively.

These are the virtues that are cardinal in every religion and hence are the centres of interest of the rabbi and the priest, and the minister in each of his parishioners. I happen to be one of those physicians who believe that these virtues are the centre of our focus. In advocating this necessity to learn to love more effectively, one is mindful of the fact that every religion has taught us that God is love — and that it is from Him that one can gain strength — so well verbalized by the Psalmist: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence corneth my help." It is my conviction that this belief can be a bulwark of strength in the life of every one of us. Wm Menninger, MD.

The Wisdom of Trust

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths."

Proverbs 3:5-6

To live successfully one must overcome blundering ineptness, the tendency to do and say the wrong thing. One must develop the deft and skillful touch that makes things turn out right. A thing does not go wrong because of some perverse fate. It is more than likely that you lack the right slant, the proper approach. If such is the case, what you need is wisdom. If you let the above text seep from your conscious to your unconscious mind, it will correct the error pattern within you and gradually endow you with wisdom. N V Peale from Thought Conditioners.

Calamity — Often a Blessing

The story is told of an only survivor of a shipwreck who was thrown upon an uninhabited island. After awhile he managed to build for himself a crude hut in which he placed the "little all" that he had saved from the sinking ship. He prayed to God for deliverance, and anxiously scanned the horizon each day to hail any ship that might chance to be passing that way. One day, upon returning from a hunt for food, he was horrified to find his hut in flames. All that he had, had now gone up in smoke.: The worst had happened, or so it appeared. But that which seemed to have happened for the worst was, in reality, for the best. To the man's limited vision, it was the worst. To God's infinite wisdom, his loss was for the best — that for which he had prayed. The very next day a ship arrived. "We saw your smoke signal," the Captain said.

Can we not take our seeming calamities and look for God's best in them?

Then – I'll Believe

When I awake and find no sun to bring the morn and warmth of day,
No moon at night to light the darkened sky,
Then – I'll believe that God is dead.

When birds refuse to wing their way o'er pathless sky
To guide their young to warmer clime, and rest awhile,
Then – I'll believe that God is dead.

When branches barbed and bare,
Refuse to bud and bloom with roses, pink and white,
Then – I'll believe that God is dead.

When people in any city feel they cannot share
All their gifts with others not so blest,
Then – I'll believe that God is dead.

When Christians over all the world
Do not believe that God revealed Himself in Christ His Son,
Then – I'll believe that God is dead.

J D Buckrell, St Catharines, Ontario.

From Voices United

Voices United is the United Church's latest hymn and worship book, published in 1997. It is an excellent treasure of hymns, prayers, responses, psalms and many other worship resources. Some of this material is presented in these pages for your meditations. The words of the hymns make thoughtful sources for comfort.

Open My Eyes, That I May See ... #371

Open my eyes, that I may see
glimpses of truth thou hast for me;
place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
voices of truth thou sendest clear;
and while the wavenotes fall on my ear,
everything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine!

Open my mouth, and let me bear
gladly the warm truth everywhere;
open my heart and let me prepare
love with thy children thus to share.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my heart, illumine me, Spirit divine!

A Prayer of Gratitude

Our Father, as we gather under this roof, sharing the events and feelings of the day, we give you thanks for our home. The warmth and coolness, the order and colour of the furnishings, the taste of good food, the feel of clean clothes — all reinforce spoken words of love and discipline. Thoughts of others who have no house, or whose family is not really a family, press in upon us — sometimes disturbing our sense of wellbeing. Free us from crippling feelings of quiet. Replace them with the kind of love for you and for them that gives added meaning and purpose of life. Show us how to be bridges between their lives and you – how to share this house. We pray in the name of Jesus who came to open the way into one family. Amen. Sara B Harrison
