Comforting Thoughts For Living – Page 4

A Prayer For God's Presence

Gracious God, in Thee we live and move and have our being. I need Thy help. May Thy healing power be here in this room. Help me to be receptive to Thy love and be aware of Thy comforting presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

0 Thou who are everywhere, be Thou within, to strengthen me; without, to keep me; above, to protect me; beneath, to uphold me; before, to direct me; behind, to keep me from straying. Our Father, hallowed be Thy Name. Amen.

Almighty God, the giver of every gift, I thank Thee for restoring health. As strength and normal life return, may I increasingly turn to Thee in gratitude for all life's blessings. Save me in temptation, guide me into channels of purposeful living and may I ever devotedly seek to do Thy will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Encouragement to Ask

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Matthew 7:7.

This is a very practical technique of prayer. It works: One reason we do not get answers to our prayers is that we ask but do not really expect to receive. We are expert askers but inexpert receivers. This spiritual formula tells us to ask and then immediately conceive of ourselves as receiving. For example, to be free from fear, ask the Lord to free you. Then believe that He has immediately done so. The minute you express your faith by sincerely asking Him for a blessing and believe your prayer is answered, your prayer is answered.

And Now We Know

High, high up in the Heavens
Far into outer space
Man now has searched beyond our world
And found a landing place.

He's walked upon the moon by day
He's slept there through the night.
Word's cannot spell it's beauty,
Nor science weigh it's might.

Adventurous man would like to know
The source of it's great power.
Why lovers sigh and wild beasts cry,
And oceans move each hour.

We see as through a darkened glass
How God in his own way
Made the lesser light to shine by night,
The sun to rule the day.

Church bells on earth are ringing
Great praises fill the air
Peace on the earth they're singing
For God is everywhere.

Prayers for To-day

0 God, give me strength to live another day. Let me not turn coward before its difficulties or reticent to its duties. Let me not lose faith in my fellow men. Keep me from ingratitude and meanness. Help me to live honestly and fearlessly so that no outward failure can discourage me or take away the joy of conscious integrity. Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things. Grant me this day some new vision of thy truth, inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness and make me the cup of strength to suffering souls, in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.

From Voices United

Voices United is the United Church's latest hymn and worship book, published in 1997. It is an excellent treasure of hymns, prayers, responses, psalms and many other worship resources. Some of this material is presented in these pages for your meditations. The words of the hymns make thoughtful sources for comfort.

O Lord My God #238  (How Great Thou Art)

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

R ... Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
I hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
R

But when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
R

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, "My God, how great thou art!"

A Prayer for the Renewal of Health

0 God, the source of all health; so fill our hearts with faith in thy love, that with calm expectancy we make room for thy power to possess us, and gracefully accept thy healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom. every family in heaven and on earth is named that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man." Ephesians 3
