COMPUTER/PRINTING TERMS...
APPLICATION - a software program designed to perform a specific task. ie
QuarkXpress is an application that is designed to facilitate the production
of the printed page.
- BITMAP - a graphic
image file format that defines an image by "mapping" individual
pixels to render an image.
- BLEED -any part
of an image that extends beyond the edge of the printed page.
- CHOKE - when
a colour is "knocked-out" of a background colour, choking adjusts
the size of the knocked-out area, creating a small area of overlap between
the two colours.
- CMYK - a colour
model that simulates colours by mixing proportions of four basic colours
of ink; cyan, magenta, yellow and black.
- EPSF - encapsulated
postscript file, a high-resolution graphic image file format with great
precision and flexibility.
- GREYSCALE - shades
of grey making up the transition of colour from black to white.
- HALFTONE - simulated
grey tones in an image created by the use of tiny dots of variable size
and proximity to each other.
- KNOCKOUT - When
more than one colour is used in printing, a "knock-out" area
is the space in a background colour that is removed so that a foreground
colour may be printed over is with out being affected by the background
colour.
- LINE ART - an
image that consist of only black and white, no grey.
- OFFSET LITHOGRAPHY
- a printing process that uses plates to impress the ink on the paper.
- PROOF - a "rough"
copy of the design, to show how the final printed piece will look when
finished
- OVERPRINT - to
print a colour directly on top of another.
- REGISTRATION
- the process of aligning each colour plate so that the colours position
properly on the page, registration or crop marks are used to align the
plates on camera-ready art.
- SPOT COLOURS
- colours that are assigned their own separate plates in the separation
process.
- STRIPPING - the
act of placing and separating images and colour areas in negatives in preparation
for plate making.
